Week of Dec 14th -18th

Chers familles,

Our last week before the holiday's is an exciting one! Our activities are all about making connections. In the mornings we are doing French Language Arts during which we use our word wall of high fluency dictée words to write in our journals. Last week, grade 2's wrote a letter to Santa. All students have also written cards with thoughtful comments and drawings. In Oral Language we are practicing by discussing the different ways we celebrate holidays. We are also reading daily in small groups while talking about our reading strategies and looking for high fluency words. Students have completed their phonics booklets and are asked to apply their letter-sound combinations to all their reading activities. Grade 2 students are continuing phonics with Madame Rolston once a week.

In grade 3 English Language Arts this week we are reviewing possessive nouns we learned about last week. Then we are going to discuss and find examples of homonyms (2 words that are pronounced the same, but their meanings and spelling are different). For example, two, to and too. This week, we will also continue our novel study of Stuart Little, by EB White. Each student has their own copy of this chapter book while Madame is modeling to read with expression by using the punctuation, picture clues and other reading aloud strategies before and during reading. After reading, students do a visualizing activity to help express their comprehension of the text. At the end of the week, students are asked to bring their term 1 English phonics activity booklet. If it is not finished, students are asked to complete and return it during after the holidays.

In Math, grade 2's are doing addition word problems. Grade 3's will continue to explore multiplication up to 10. So far students have learned strategies for multiplying by 0, 1, 2, 4, 9 and 10. This week we will look at the patterns when multiplying by 5 and continue to explore the multiplication table. A copy will be coming home shortly and students are encouraged to begin memorizing this table.

In the afternoons, students are busy practicing, performing and watching our Primary and Intermediate Holiday Concerts. Please come and join us on Wednesday from 1-2pm in the Quadra gym for our performance in the Primary Concert. On Tuesday, students are asked to wear any combination of red, white, green and black. Some of our grade 3 choir students will also be performing on Thursday from 1-2pm during the Intermediate Concert.

Friday is pajama day! We will have a fun-filled day with pancakes in the morning followed by a movie and popcorn In the afternoon we will do some basketball in the gym and have an afternoon of open choice arts and crafts.

See you back at school on Monday January 4th. Have a wonderful and restful holiday!

Week of Dec 7th - 11th

lundi le 7 décembre, 2015

Chers famillies,

Welcome to another exciting week with Division 6! We are learning many new things as our 2nd term begins. In French Language Arts, we are learning and practicing to conjugate the verbs avoir, être and all regular verbs ending in -er in the present tense. Students are learning to isolate the root of the verb (le radical) and add the proper ending, depending on the subject pronoun or noun. We are finding them in the stories we read and writing them in our journals. Today, students read to their little buddies. Tomorrow, students will participate in their weekly guided reading groups and continue to practice oral pronunciation, reading strategies and answer comprehension questions.

In grade 3 English Language Arts, we are continuing to learn about nouns. This week we are learning how to write and pronounce plural nous. We will also be starting a novel study of Stuart Little by EB White. Together will learn to read and understand this small chapter book with a variety of learning activities and of course, the movie at the end.

In grade 3 Math, students are continuing to learn about basic multiplication. This week students are learning the rules for multiplying by 0 (the answer is always 0), and multiplying by 1 (the answers is always the other factor). In grade 2 Math, students are skip counting, learning about symmetry and creating graphs.

In Science this week, students will learn the different parts of their eyes and explore their reflection in the mirror. They will predict and observe how their eyes change in the light versus the dark. In Social Studies, we are doing a short unit called Festival of Lights. Students will learn about different cultures and how they celebrate various holidays with light (for example, Hanukkah, Diwali, Kwanzaa, Chrsitams and Santa Lucia). As we get ready for our holidays in 2 weeks, all students will share how they celebrate their favourite holidays during our carpet discussions and in their journals.

In Visual Arts, parent and teacher in training Morgan Holmes (Keels' dad) and a few of his classmates, will come do an art project with us on Friday. Students will learn to make ropes using the a Wet Felting technique. In PE this week, we have our last swim lesson on Thursday. We have also been doing some outdoor circuit jogging and indoor team building with bench ball. This week we will start a basketball unit.

On Thursday we are participating in our annual school-wide Loonie Emporium. Students are asked to bring a strong and large shopping bag, their envelope with $4 and the 4 names of family members they will be purchasing gifts for (not including themselves). We will be going as a class from 9:50am-10:20am. If students wish to purchase an item for themselves or more for others, parents can accompany them after school. If you have any donations of lightly used items you can drop them off at the entrance of the school this week.

Many thanks for all your support at home and have a wonderful week!
