Dear families,
In Language Arts students are continuing to read in French on a daily basis by learning phonetic sound combinations and sounding them out together as a class. In Writing, students are using new vocabulary (about fall and Halloween), using joiner words and building sentences to write stories about their autumn adventures. In Reading, students will also be taking turns to read individually with their teacher, in small guided reading groups and independently throughout the week. Practice makes perfect!
In Math, grade 2's are starting to learn number concepts and place value such as ones, tens and hundreds. Grade 3's are continuing to learn addition of large numbers up to 1000. New this week is subtraction of large numbers using the borrowing method. I will be asking students to bring some of their Halloween candy to school on Monday next week. We will use them to learn how to sort and graph.
In Social Studies this week, we are continuing our Environment Unit by becoming Climate Superhero's! Students will be coming home with a checklist to help reduce our carbon footprint at home. These will be due back at the end of November to follow up on how we are able to make sustainable lifestyle choices. This is also our week to be "garbage gobblers", which means it is our job to do our part in keeping the school grounds clean, by safely picking up garbage using buckets and claws. Bravo students!
In Science this week we are starting our solids, liquids and gases unit. We are beginning with solids by finding ways to sort them in a scientific way (for example by colour, shape or purpose).
On Wednesday we have special guest Constable Craig Barker, our new Quadra School liaison officer. He is coming to do a Halloween safety presentation. In the afternoon we have our 3rd and last visit with Leslie McGarry from the Native Friendship Centre. She will be teaching students more about local First Nations culture with a craft activity. On Thursday afternoon, we are excited for a special Story Theatre performance in the gym.
By the way, Salmon are now spawning at Goldstream Park. If you have a chance to go after school or on the weekend, I highly recommend it ;)
Happy Halloween! Mme Garcin
