Week of Feb 1st - 5th 2016

Bonjour familles de Division 6!

This week in French Language Arts, students are writing a story about an adventure in Canada's northern territories. This is integrating with our Social Studies unit of Canadian geography as we build our vocabulary and cultural knowledge of these places. We are building sentences and putting them together with characters, a place, a problem and a solution. In reading, students are doing guided reading groups and working on reading with fluency. We are also reading books together at the carpet with large font so that students can hear what fluency sounds like when reading punctuation (eg. voice lowers at periods and goes up at exclamation or question marks).

In English, grade 3's will continue their novel study of Stuart Little. In grammar, we are continuing our study of adjectives and finding them in our story. In Math, grade 2's are continuing to learn their addition and subtraction. In Grade 3, students are learning single-digit division.

In Social Studies this week, students are continuing to learn about our 3 territories, 10 provinces and 3 oceans. They are learning to read maps and find things according to north, south east and west. Our Quadra map is almost finished and it will be out on display in the hallway by the end of the week!

In Science, students are learning the different parts of a plant. New vocabulary includes: la tige (stem), la racine (root), la feuille (leaf), la fleur (flower). We will expand on this in the coming months as spring arrives by learning about photosynthesis, native plants and how to grow a plant from seed. On Wednesday we are meeting our kindergarten buddies to help them learn about the 5 senses. We will do a hands-on activity outside and perhaps continue on this topic next week.

In Art this week we will be writing loving messages and cards. February is heart month here at Quadra. Today hearts came home with a note for parents. Please write a kind act your child has done on this heart and sent it back to school. They will all be posted in the front hall this week for everyone to see! Thank you to our Random Acts of Kindness Team for organizing this.

In PE last week, students learned different ways of moving their bodies in a safe and coordinated way. This includes galloping, skipping and balancing as some key movement skills. They also learned to balance balls using different body parts and how to land a jump smoothly by landing softly on their toes and rolling back on their heels with bent knees.

Have a wonderful week everyone,

Mme Garcin
