Week of Feb 9th - 12th

Chers familles de Division 6,

This week in French Language Arts, students are reviewing the present tense of the irregular verb aller (to go). Students are also finishing their stories about an adventure in Canada's North. Some students are volunteering to read their stories aloud in front of the class, which is encouraging others to do the same. Two or three stories will be selected among volunteers to use as a read-aloud example of how to correct grammar, punctuation, meaning and structure of each sentence using our projector screen. This teaches students how to find their mistakes and fix them. We are specifically looking at sentence structure and word endings with a subject (noun or pronoun), conjugated verb and a predicate (un compliment). Good news, we now have more learning support time with Mr MacDonald. We can now continue to do more guided reading groups throughout the week. Also, keep up your daily French reading and home everyone!

In Math, grade 3's are continuing to learn simple division. We have also started to learn how to read a clock using mini handheld clocks. Students are encouraged to wear a watch to school this week if they have one. Once they have the basics down, they will be learning the 24 hour clock. For example, 1:30pm is written and said as 13h30 (h is heures). Grade 3's are also beginning to count money using a fun bingo game and play money. Grade 2's are working their way through all their addition and subtraction numbers 0 -9. Last week they practiced adding and subtracting 9. This week they are subtracting using problem solving techniques. Watch for a test coming home Wednesday. Mme Rolston and I encourage lots of practical practice at home and in the community whenever the opportunity arises. For example, you can ask your child to count the change in your wallet or add and subtract the food on your plate during dinner time. Math is fun!

In English, grade 3's will be introduced to adverbs and we will continue our novel study of Stuart Little. Last week students were very successful at identifying and finding adjectives in our story! Remember to practice reading in English at home, then talking about it. After our novel we will be doing reading and comprehension exercises. I hope all grade 3's are using the RAZ Kids online reading program. Please ensure your child is following the correct log in information and selecting their specifically assigned student number.

In Social Studies today, students are learning to use reference materials such as books and atlases to find information on a Canadian province or territory. Students are learning about different symbols such as flags, birds, coats of arms and flowers. Students are also learning to find locations on a map based on north, south, east and west directional intructions.

In Science this week, we will review what we learned with Mark Albany on our plant walk at Beacon Hill park by talking, drawing and writing about it.

In Art, students are creating thoughtful art cards for Valentine's Day. To tie into our learning of the Canadian northern Inuit culture, this week or next we will be creating an Inuksuk structure using real stones. We will discuss the importance of balance in our lives with family and friends who are here to help us find our way. Each stone will be carefully chosen to represent virtues we like (such as kindness, sharing and patience) that come together to create our happiness.

Friday is red and white clothing day! In celebration of Valentines Day, students are welcome to exchange their cards this afternoon. Remember to bring one for each student to ensure inclusivity. Friday is also library day. A friendly reminder to return all library books every Friday for exchange or renewal.

Have a wonderful week and happy learning,
Mme Garcin
