Week of Jan 25th- 29th 2016

lundi le 25 janvier, 2016

Chers familles,

This is going to be another exciting week. Today students learned the present tense of the irregular verb "aller" (to go). We learned a song to help us remember it so ask your child to sing it at home! By the way, this will be the verb for the following grade 3 dictée in two weeks. Now that we are finished writing our first pen pal letters, students will write a story. We are focusing on meaning (ideas and details), style (vocabulary and sentence structure), form (beginning middle and end) and conventions (spelling and grammar). In Reading, students are currently taking turns reading one-on-one with me and Mr Bob MacDonald, our learning support teacher. This can help us provide specific feedback and assess their current reading level. At this time of year, it is amazing to see the progress being made since September. Great job with your home reading routines, they are making a big difference in reading abilities.

In Math, grade 2's are adding and subtracting 10's. Grade 3's are continuing to learn division, as well as do multiplication drills to help solidify these skills. In English, grade 3's this week are continuing to learn about adjectives. All grade 3's now have a RAZ Kids account for practicing their English reading skills online. Today they logged on during our computer block. Grade 3 students are also encouraged to do this from home. And finally, we are reading chapter 8 of Stuart Little. Many students are enjoying our first read aloud novel study.

In Social Studies this week, students are introduced to Canadian geography. Today we located our 10 provinces, 3 territories and some of our capital cities. We are also putting some finishing touches on our classroom project of École Quadra School. We are adding a legend, north arrow and title. Student's are currently taking photographs of each staff member. Once we add these photos our project will be complete! We will let you know when and where it will be on display.

As part of an early introduction to our Science unit on plants, and an integration of local Indigenous cultural studies, Wednesday morning we will be going on our plant walk with botanist and local First Nations member, Mark Albany. Remember to wear warm clothes, rain gear and bring a healthy snack. We will be back at lunch time. On Friday we will have another exciting PE lesson with the PISE program. Last week students practiced their running skills and learned 3 running games they can play with their friends: Everybody is It Tag, Germ Time and Canadian Dog Tails.

Remember that on Friday there is a Family dance here in the gym from 6:30-8:30 pm. The theme is glow in the dark!

Happy learning, Mme Garcin

Chers familles de Division 6,

This week in French Language Arts, students are writing final copies of their letters to Doncaster pen pals. We are applying grammar, punctuation and spelling that we have been learning since September. In Reading, students are resuming guided reading groups, which we do 3-4 times per week. Each time we focus on a particular reading strategy, for example, reading with fluency (with a liaison), phonetics (letter sound combinations) or comprehension. Since September we have had a UVIC student volunteer to read with us on Wednesday's. This will be her last week and we will soon have more UVIC students coming in to read with students one-on-one.

In Grade 3 English, we have a spelling test on Thursday.  Students are encouraged to use spellingcity.com/egarcin to study our words. We are also learning to use RAZ Kids online during our weekly computer block. This is an English reading program Mme Rolston has subscribed to for us and students are enjoying at school. All Grade 3's have been sent home with log-in information, a student number and their starting level (which is different from French reading levels). In grammar this week, we are learning about what adjectives are and how to identify them in text. And finally, students are very engaged in our novel study of Stuart Little. We will continue to discuss reading strategies before, during and after reading, such as predicting, oral fluency and summarizing.

In Math this week, Grade 3's are learning division, and continuing to do practice multiplication drills. Grade 2's are continuing to learn and practice addition and subtraction. In Social Studies this week, students are creating one large map of École Quadra School with a title, north arrow, colour code, labels and photographs. They are also learning about the 7 continents and 4 oceans of our world. In PE, we are learning some key skills such as balancing, throwing, galloping and jumping. We will also continue being active outside regularly, with cardio and some basketball.

We have not yet decided what we are doing in Art this week, but please come by and visit our dot pictures, paper lanterns and face collages we made last week on display in the class! As part of our learning about social responsibility, our face collages have prompted some interesting discussions about how we are all very different (physically and emotionally). The key message is to respect each others differences.

To another exciting week of learning!  Mme Garcin

Week of Jan 12th - 15th 2016

mardi le 12 janvier, 2016

Chers familles de Division 6,

In French Language Arts this week, students are practicing their writing through practice of their dictée words and sentences with chalk and chalkboards. Students are also writing their draft letters to their new Doncaster pen pals. Paying attention to detail with punctuation, capitol letters and verb endings are being emphasized more as we learn to self-correct and proofread our written work. In reading, students continue to do daily individual reading where they get to choose from a variety of picture books, chapter books, magazines and their library books. Today, in groups of 2, students did some purposeful reading with atlases, by looking for specific information in order to answer questions orally. Students are also encouraged to share what they read orally as a "show and tell" type of activity.

In Grade 3 English this week, students will learn more about prefixes and suffixes. Identifying words within words can help increase reading comprehension. This helps build English vocabulary and word identification. For example, restart (to start again) and unforgettable (to not forget). We are also continuing our novel study of Stuart Little, chapter 4.

In Math, grade 2 students are practicing speed and fluency by adding and subtracting to 20. They will have weekly quizzes in this order: 0, 1, 10, 9, 8, 5, 2, 4, 3, 6 and 7. They will then be moving into adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers over the next 6 weeks. In grade 3 Math this week, students have a multiplication quiz on Wednesday. They are also doing multiplication drills and card games up to 10 x 10. We will soon begin division of one-digit numbers.

In Social Studies, we have started our mapping unit. We are exploring the atlas and learning the different parts of a map such as the title, legend, north arrow, scale and colours. Students have mapped their classroom and we are now planning a classroom project- mapping Quadra school. To create this large map we will apply our tracing, writing and teamwork skills. We will also use our classroom IPad to take photos of school staff members.

Chinese New Year is coming up on February 8th, therefore students have created beautiful dot pictures of their favourite Chinese zodiak animal. 2016 is the year of the monkey. Come and see their beautiful artwork in the classroom! This week, students will create and complete lanterns and creative face collages they had started last week.

From now until March, during our Friday gym block, we will participate in an exciting in-school program offered by PISE (Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence). They will teach students a variety of movement skills and Physical Literacy. We will also continue being active on a regular basis by doing outdoor activities such as running and basketball.

Today we had a wonderful guest speaker and trumpet player from the Victoria Symphony Orchestra! Students were very excited to learn about orchestral instrument names and families. We will be going to the University of Victoria by bus in February to watch this group perform. More details to come by email.

Have a wonderful week everyone! Mme Garcin

Week of Jan 5th - 9th 2016

lundi le 5 janvier 2016

Happy New Year Division 6 families! We are back in the classroom to continue our fun learning activities. To enrich our experiences, we have some exciting field trips and guest presentations planned this term. For example, we will go on a Native Plant tour at Beacon Hill Park and watch the Victoria Symphony perform at UVIC. In preparation for our Symphony visit, our first in-class presentation will be a trumpet player next Tuesday, January 12th.

In Language Arts this term, there will be more of a focus on writing. This week, students are reviewing the present tense of the irregular verbs avoir (to have) and être (to be). For Grade 3's, these verbs are to be memorized for the next two dictées on January 14th and 28th. We sing songs to help us remember them and we have them posted in the classroom as a visual reference when speaking, reading and writing. Today students shared one thing they did during their holiday, orally and in their journals. They are learning to write a topic sentence, then add interesting details. This will lead into our paragraph writing skills in the upcoming weeks. Students will also be learning to write letters to their new Doncaster pen pals. Grade 2's are continuing to do additional reading and phonics activities with Mme Rolston, while Grade 3's are doing English Language learning.

In English, Grade 3's will continue where they left of before the holidays. This week we will review grammar topics such as proper and common nouns, plural nouns, possessive nouns and homonyms. Next are prefixes and suffixes. In Reading, we will continue our novel study of Stuart Little, by EB White. To support reading at home, Grade 3 students now have access to a great reading program called RAZ Kids. Log-on information will be coming home by Tuesday, January 12th.

In Math, Grade 2's are now learning their basic addition and subtraction skills. Number sense booklets have gone home today and students are encouraged to complete these at home and return them to Mme Rolston upon completion. Grade's 3's are asked to begin memorizing the multiplication table. Today we reviewed some of the strategies for multiplying by 0, 1, 2 and 10. A multiplication table was sent home before the holidays. We will soon have a fill-in-the blank test. Students are encouraged to practice at home. One fun way of doing this is to login onto abcya.com. Search for multiplication games!

In Social Studies, students have started a geography unit on mapping. We will learn to map our classroom and our school. Today students learned how to read a compass using a pirate treasure map. Students will also soon be learning about our world continents and Canada's provinces and capitals. We will begin a Science Unit on plants later in the term when we go to Beacon Hill Park for a plant tour and visit our local parks in early Spring.

In PE, we will continue our basketball unit. Our focus is on ball handling and team building. Our library visits for term 2 are now on Friday's and we will have the opportunity to visit with our part-time librarian/comedian, Mr Leichner! Please help your child remember to return and/or renew their library books weekly on Fridays.

Please note that Monday January 11th there is no school and is a PRO-D Day for teachers. We will be getting to know our new BC curriculum, which will be rolling out (most probably) this coming September 2016. This is when many teachers will begin transitioning to some of these new big ideas and concepts. Drafts of the new curriculum are available at https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/.

Have a wonderful week, Mme Garcin
