Weeks of Dec 5 th - 16th, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

We only have 2 weeks left before the Winter Break and here's what's we're up to...

In French students are reading with me one-on-one so that I can give them specific feedback and assess their level of fluency and comprehension. Today, each student read a book to their Kindergarten buddies. Students have progressed very well in their reading this term, bravo! They are now writing the final good copies of their Doncaster pen pal letters. We hope to send these off before the break, along with their picture and a colorful drawing. We are also preparing for the last dictée and using the sentences to make connections to grammar, spelling and punctuation we have been learning so far this term. For example, the application of commas, exclamation and question marks, verb conjugations, the spelling of common sight words and the plural form of nouns and adjectives. A new grammatical concept being learned this week is writing sentences from the affirmative to negative form. In French, the words "ne...pas" go before and after the verb. For example, Je suis contente ( I am happy) becomes....Je ne suis pas contente (I am not happy).

In English, students are reading with me one-on-one and given personalized feedback. They are also completing and correcting their short stories. By the way, there won't be a spelling test next week before the holidays. In Math, students are practicing single-digit multiplication and division. They will be taking home a multiplication table and are encouraged to memorize as many as they can over the holidays.  We will continue division when we return from holidays.

In Science, we are continuing to explore the answers to our Big Questions. For example, why do humans walk on two legs, what does the moon do for us? what was the first language on earth? In Social Studies we are learning about cultures and religions around the world that celebrate holidays using light. For example, Winter solstice, Santa-Lucia, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Christmas, Zwanzaa and Diwali.

In Art this week, students are printing the engraved stories they illustrated with 6 images. Once they are dry, students will re-tell and present their story in small groups or to the class. Students will also be creating a variety of crafts this week and next, some for home and some for the tree we'll be decorating at Government House next week on Tuesday December 13th. Students did a wonderful performance today at the intermediate concert, bravo!

For the next couple weeks, students will continue to participate in daily physical activity with their weekly dance lessons, outdoor play and cooperative games in the gym. This is the last post before the holidays start. The last day of school is Friday, December 16. This is an exciting day because students are asked to wear PJ's all day and families are invited for a pancake breakfast in the gym from 8:30-9am. We'll be back at school on Monday January 2, 2017.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Mme Garcin

Week of Nov 28th - Dec 2nd, 2016

lundi le 28 novembre, 2016

In French, students are learning to conjugate regular verbs ending in -re in the present tense. For example, répondre, vendre, prendre, attendre. Students are also reading and writing their pen pal letters. In these letters, students are responding to questions and asking questions. Writing these letters is also helping us apply grammar we have been learning so far. For example, full sentences with capital letters and periods, conjugating verbs in the present tense and applying the subject, verb and adjective agreement using feminine/masculine and singular/plural endings. This week and next, I will be reading with students individually. I will help them with their oral fluency and review decoding and comprehension strategies.

In Math this week, students are learning one-digit division and how it is related to multiplication. For example, 3 X 4=12 and 12 ÷ 3= 4. In English, students will continue to write a short story using words with the short I vowel sound. I will also be reading with them individually to see where they are at in word decoding and text comprehension.

In Science, we have created a list of "big questions", some related to space sciences, others are general questions. For example today we learned "Why do birds fly". Some of our other questions are: Why does the earth spin? Why don't we walk on four legs like animals? Why do balls bounce? What was the first language on earth?

In Social Studies and Art this week, students will have a presentation by an organization called "African Aids Angels". Students will learn about African animals and cultures and how AIDS has affected the lives of children and families. They will learn how they can help these children (money for food, clothing, medicine, school supplies) and in exchange create a craft angel. These angels will be ornaments students can hang in a tree at the Government House Tree decorating party. On Friday we are doing the second part of last week's art project: printmaking. Using a story about truthfulness called "The Empty Pot" for inspiration, students are creating a story sequence of 6 images that will be printed using a roller and ink. Thank you to Anisa for doing this wonderful activity!

In PE last week and this week, students are using the ball skills they've been learning in a game called "bench ball". Students are learning to aim, throw, move and play respectfully with a team. Students are also practicing their song a little more often now for the upcoming intermediate winter concert on Wednesday, Dec 7th next week at 1:30pm. Family and friends are welcome in the Quadra gym!

Happy learning! Mme Garcin

Week of Nov 21th - 25th, 2016

Chers familles,

In French this week we are learning to conjugate regular verbs ending in -ir. After reading the amazing stories student have read, we will review some key grammatical concepts such as: plural/adjective agreements, masculine/feminine. We will also play a game using words and images to learn adverbs, in particular place adverbs (e.g close, far, beside, under, ect). Some students will complete the final good copy of their stories, and some students will continue to read their stories to the class. If time permits, we will also continue to write our pen pal letters. On Wednesday afternoon, students will read to their little buddies in Kindergarten.

In Math, students are continuing to learn multiplication through practice and games. Games such as bingo and cards can help students learn and memorize their multiplication table up to 10. In English, students will learn to identify the short i sounds, such as big, lip, sit. They will also practice reading and finding this sound in text.

In Science this week students will be asked to identify a question they have about space, matter, atoms and thermal energy (topics covered in science throughout term 1) that can be proven scientifically. We will then look up these questions on the internet. In Social Social studies we will use our talking sticks to share what we have learned about First Nations cultures locally, and in other parts of Canada. Students worked in groups to research traditional aspects of various First Nations culture such as food, shelter and clothing. Each group will present their findings.

In Art, students will be introduced to printmaking on Friday. Students are also continuing to learn about "zones of regulation", a program aimed to help students identify their emotions and use strategies to manage their feelings and actions.

If anyone wants to submit a December scholastic order, I will collect them until this Friday, Nov 25th.

Happy learning! Mme Garcin

Week of Nov 14th - 17th, 2016

Dear Division 6 families,

In French Language Arts this week, students are receiving their first pen pal letters from Doncaster! They will read them to each other in small groups and to the class if they wish. They will then learn how to write a letter, and begin a draft in their journals. Students are also writing the final corrected draft of their fictional stories about their adventure in space. As with the letters, students will learn important aspects of public speaking such as using a loud, clear voice, with some eye contact and changes in voice tone. In grammar, students will continue to learn how to conjugate regular -er verbs, -re and -ir verbs.

In Math, students are learning how to multiply by 5 and 10 by looking for patterns. For example, when multiplying by five, the ones always end in a 0 or a 5. When multiplying by 10, add a 0 to the other factor.

In English, students are learning the common sight words beginning with letters e and f (in preparation for their spelling test on Thursday). If time permits, students will continue to learn and practice identifying and spelling a wide variety of homonyms. Some are continuing to write a short story using the short e vowel sound.

In Science today we went to the Harland Landfill. We leaned all about how waste disposal is managed and why it is so important to reduce, reuse and recycle. We also saw firsthand how solid matter decomposes into water and gas. The gas is even used to generate power at the landfill!

In combination with Social Studies and Art this week, students are learning about the importance of the talking stick (speaking and listening). Mrs. Bourque is coming in again this week to complete the decoration of our painted sticks with strings, beads and feathers. Our new counselor Katie Lukes, is also coming in to do a special presentation on Thursday about "zones of regulation". This is a program that gives students strategies for being self-aware of their bodies, feelings and voices. Our physical activities this week will include outdoor play, movement exercises and possibly some yoga (stretching).

This is a 4-day week with a Pro-D day on Friday. Have a wonderful week!

Week of Nov 7th - 10th, 2016

Chers familles,

This week in French Language Arts, students are learning how to identify the subject, verb and noun of a sentence. They are also learning to conjugate regular verbs ending in -er, -ir and -re, using the stem (le radical) and the ending (la terminaison). For example, today students learned how to conjugate the verb aimer (to love) using the stem aim. Other reular -er verbs that are conjugated with the same ending is chanter, regarder, danser, jouer and many more.

Aimer

J'aime
Tu aimes
Il aime
Elle aime
Nous aimons
Vous aimez
Ils aiment
Elles aiment

In English this week, students are learning about homonyms (for example two, too and to). In Math, students are reviewing concepts learned so far this term, which will prepare them for a math quiz. This will include number sequences, greater than/less than, place value and addition/subtraction of large numbers. Students are now learning multiplication. So far they have learned the concept of repeated addition (ie. 2 × 4 = 2+2+2+2) and the commutative property (ie 3 × 2 = 2 × 3). We will now learn the rules of multiplication by 0, 1, 2, 3, etc by looking for patterns that can help us multiply quickly using mental math.

In Social Studies this week, students are looking at the similarities and difference among traditional Canadian First Nations shelters, clothing, food and other interesting facts. For example, why cedar homes on the west coast, animal hides in plains and igloos in the north? Students are working in small groups, learning to find information in text, and presenting their findings in front of the class. Last week, students built traditional Nuu-chah-nulth and Coast Salish homes with different roofs. Now, these designs will help us discuss the environmental and cultural factors that influence how structures are built.

In Science this week, we will look at how matter (solids, liquids and gases) change form. For example, how does solid matter decompose into gases and liquids? This will help us prepare for our upcoming field trip to Hartland landfill next week.

In Art this week, our Aboriginal assistant Pamela Bourque is helping us create talking sticks with paint, fathers and beads. She will remind us the practice of speaking and listening in a kind a caring way. Also, in preparation of our Remembrance Day celebration, today students completed poppy collages and prints that are now on display in the gym and in the school entrance.

In physical activity this week students are participating in yoga, dancing and outdoor play. On Thursday Nov 10th we will have a Remembrance Day assembly in the gym and there is no school on Friday Nov 11th.

Have a wonderful week,

Mme Garcin

Monday 31 October 2016

Week of Oct 31st - Nov 4th, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

In French Language Arts this week, students are practicing their oral language during our daily calendar question and answer period. Today, students also participated in a fun drama activity where they created and performed skits based on Halloween safety and trick-or-treating scenarios. A variety of reading activities are also happening on a daily basis. This week as a class and in small guided reading groups, we are looking for the phonetic sounds we have learned in our dictées so far : é (ed, ée, etc), è (ai, et, etc)  and a (à, ah, etc). Each can be spelled in many different ways and we are learning to them find in our books and in our writing. In grammar this week, students are learning to conjugate two common irregular verbs in the present tense: faire (to do) and aller (to go). In writing, students are now correcting rough drafts and writing the final good copy of their adventure in our solar system.

In English we are continuing to learn how to read using a variety of strategies such as sounding out, chunking and using pictures. Our focus this week is to find the short e vowel sounds in a text. Students will also write a short story. While writing, they will refer to their personal common sight word dictionaries and be asked to apply grammar and build complete sentences with a subject and its predicate (complete an idea about the subject). Students will be showed how to sequence their ideas using words such as first, then, next and finally.

In Math, students are continuing to practice 2 and 3-digit addition and subtraction using a variety of strategies. Some students use manipulatives such as power of ten cards. Others use the carry-over and borrowing strategy. Some are breaking numbers into smaller chunks of 5's and 10's, while others are rounding up or down.

In Science this week, we will conduct experiments that illustrate thermal energy and 3 ways that heat can transfer: conduction (eg. holding a cup of hot water and feeling the heat through the cup), convection (eg. hot water rises, cold water sinks), and radiation (eg. an ice cubes melts in the sun). We will also be plating some flower bulbs outside on Thursday. We hope see them grow in the spring!

In Social Studies we will continue to look at the similarities and differences among Canadian First Nations cultures (eg Haida, Salish, Iroquois, etc). In particular, artwork, traditional homes, tools, weapons and clothing.

In Gym this week we will create cooperative games. Students will work in small groups using a variety of gym equipment. Today, Constable Craig visited our classroom to talk about Halloween safety before, during and after trick-or-treating. We are now very excited to get our costumes on!

Have a safe and spooky Halloween!

Mme Garcin

Monday 24 October 2016

Week of Oct 24th - 28th 2016

lundi le 24 octobre, 2016

In French Language Arts this week, students are learning the various ways to write the sound "a", like in apple. It can also be spelled a, à, â, as, at, ats, ha, ap, az and ah. There are many silent letters in French and our study of the dictée sentences can help us learn how to read and write words with this sound. We are adding common sight words to our word wall such as "avec", "beaucoup" and "très". We are also learning to conjugate and memorize the verbs "avoir" (to be) and "être" (to have) in the present tense. Students are also continuing to write stories they started last week with the title "Mon aventure dans notre système solaire" (My adventure in our solar system). Applying our knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure are important in these stories.

In English, we will correct our short a vowel stories we wrote using the words "cat", "rat" and "ant". Next, we will read a short e vowel sound story together. Then we will use our English dictionaries (that includes all our spelling words) to write a short story about Pen-Leg Ben who was the best pirate in the Red Sea!

In Math, we will review place value up to 1000 using Power of Ten cards (a math program with  number cards used to decompose numbers). We will relate this to addition and subtraction of 2 and 3 digit numbers. Students will also continue to practice the carry-over and borrowing strategy so that they can learn different strategies and use the one that works best for them.

In Science, students are learning about the various parts of the atom (proton, neutron and electron). They are also working in groups to create an information table about each planet in our solar system. For example, the distance from the sun, temperature, rotation and diameter are the facts they had to find together using reference materials. Math is integrated by reading and writing large numbers, as well as the importance of including units of measurement such as km and degree Celsius.

In Social Studies, students are learning the names and characteristics of different First Nations cultures across Canada, such as Coast Salish, Haida and Micmac. They are also learning vocabulary associated with modes of transportation, foods and traditional clothing.

In PE, students will create cooperative games using different type of balls. Students are also outside running on a regular basis. When it's raining, we do regular 'Go Noodle' brain breaks by doing singing, exercise and stretching routines in the classroom using our screen and projector.

In Art last week, students carved their own mini pumpkins with plaster and carving tools. This week they will paint it and add the face. Each student has chosen a specific emotion or feeling for their pumpkin face. This allows us to discuss emotional vocabulary such as happy, sad, frustrated, excited, etc. On Friday, if we are able to find enough parent/guardian volunteers, we will carve real pumpkins on Friday afternoon. On Monday, October 31st students are asked to wear orange and black (no costumes or masks please in order to avoid loss or damage prior to Halloween).

Thank you for all your support at home,  Mme Garcin

Wednesday 12 October 2016

Week of Oct 11th - 14th and Oct 17th - 20th, 2016

mercredi le 12 octobre, 2016

In French Language Arts this week students are learning about the phonetic sound è. Also spelled e, ê, ei, est, et, ets, ai, aie, ais, ait, aix and hai. These words are examined by looking at the dictée sentences and finding each of these sounds within a word. This week we begin our study of verbs in the present tense, starting with a review of avoir (to have) and être (to be). We will sing songs to help us remember how to conjugate these common irregular verbs. In writing this week, we will learn to create a short story plan using the following prompts: today (who, what, where and when), first (how), then (the problem) and finally (the solution). Students are continuing to read in small guided reading groups, 1 to 2 times per week. They also read independently in class every day for 10-20 minutes. It is encouraged that students read 15-20 minutes daily, in French at home.

In English Language Arts today students recited the English phonetic alphabet. This week we have started reading sentences and words with the short a vowel sound, such as cat and bat. In the classroom, there is a wide range of English reading materials. Students are reading English texts at their independent reading level at least once a week. Daily English reading at home is also recommended. Our spelling lists are based on the most common words (sight words). Our next spelling test will be on Thursday Oct 20th. The list will be sent home on Friday and they will also be posted here.

In Math, students are continuing to learn about place value up to 1000 using manipulatives, pictures, numbers and words. We are also reviewing how to add 3 numbers (eg. 5+3+2= __ ), how to fill-in a missing number (eg. 2 + __ = 5) and subtracting more than once (eg. 8-4-1=__ ). Now that basic addition and subtraction concepts have been reviewed, 2-digit addition and subtraction is next. Students will begin to learn the vertical stacking method using the borrowing strategy (that most of us learned in school). We will also learn to add and subtract using mental math strategies by breaking down and rounding numbers in groups of 5's and 10's.

Last week during our Science presentation, we learned about our Big Bang Theory, that the sun is made up of hydrogen and helium molecules, and that these molecules break down into atoms. We also learned that everything in our world is made up of 3 types of matter: solids, liquids and gases. This week we will look more closely at atoms and their parts (proton, neutron and electron) and how hydrogen and oxygen come together to make water (H20).

In Social Studies, students will continue to learn about virtues that complement the 7 First Nations teachings we have already discussed (honesty, truth, courage, wisdom, love, respect and humility). On Friday we will have our weekly unity circle where a virtues card is selected for discussion (for example, friendship). There is also an opportunity for each student to speak and be heard with the passing of a talking stick.

In Gym students will continue to practice throwing using various methods, such as overhand and underhand. Students will also work together in cooperative groups to create a game with rules and an objective using a wall and a ball.

Given that this week and next week are both short, this blog post covers our learning for two weeks. Please note, that next week school finishes at 11:50am on Tuesday Oct 18th and Wed Oct 19th. Friday Oct 21 is a PRO-D day, therefore no school next Friday.

I look forward to seeing many of you during parent/teacher meetings on the afternoons of Tuesday Oct 18th and Wednesday Oct 19th. Confirmation times were sent home today in student agendas. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Happy learning:) Mme Garcin

Monday 3 October 2016

Week of Oct 3rd - 7th, 2016

lundi le 3 octobre, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

In Language Arts, students are reading independently and are being read to daily. Twice a week we also do guided reading groups of 5 to 6. During these guided reading groups are we learning a variety of reading strategies such as questioning, predicting, pronunciation, comprehension and re-telling.

Oral French is encouraged in-class at all times. Particularly during our calendar routine where students ask and answer questions, share how they are feeling, learn to read a calendar, tell time and describe the weather. Sometimes when students are heard speaking French, they are given a "dollar"as an incentive. This integrates well with Math because students will count their money at the end of each term.

Today, students learned how to identify nouns, adjectives and verbs. We will continue to find them in the books we read and the sentences we write. Students are currently working on completing a poster about themselves and a small book called "Mes vancances d'été", where we learn to apply new vocabulary of common sight words and our knowledge of sentence structure (capitals, periods, subject, verb, noun, adjective). Students are also learning to use reference materials such as a French dictionary, English/French dictionary, our word wall and eventually the online program "word reference.com".

In English this week, we will begin by learning to read short and long vowel sounds. Students have their first English spelling test on Thursday, and they will also review nouns and adjectives in English if time permits.

In Math this week, students are learning place value up to thousands using manipulatives. We are continuing to skip count forwards and backwards. Later this week we will apply our counting strategies during our review of single digit basic addition and subtraction operations.

In Science we have begun a space unit. Now that we know the planets in our solar system we will focus an individual parts such as the sun, moon, stars and other elements of space. Tuesday morning we have a special presentation by Lauri Roche from the Royal Astronomical Society of Victoria. She will do an interactive presentation in order to bring some of our new science curriculum topics to life such as atoms, thermal energy and the sun.

In Social Studies this week we will talk about some important virtues such as kindness, honesty and bravery. In Art this week students will learn about local First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers and create a painting using his style. In Gym, students are learning to throw and catch a ball using different methods (overhand, underhand). Also, many of our students are in cross country, so we are also running laps around the school to build our stamina and cardio. In the classroom we talk about why it is important to exercise, eat well and drink water regularly.

Other special events this week includes meeting our Kindergarten buddies on Wednesday. Students will trace their buddies on the ground and teach body part vocabulary. Wednesday is also our weekly library visit, so please help students remember to return and/or renew all their books, merci!

It is recommended that students practice dictée (or spelling) for about 15 minutes per evening, and read in French for another 15-20 minutes (parents and guardians - please remember to initial the reading log). This helps develop a good study routine for grades 4 and 5, where homework will be assigned more often.

Thank you for all your support at home and have a great week!

Mme Garcin

Monday 26 September 2016

Week of Sept 26th - 30th, 2016

lundi le 26 septembre, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

French Language Arts

Speaking- Every morning students participate in our calendar routine, led by a student asking questions and receiving full sentence answers. To promote and encourage French in the classroom throughout the day, students are awarded fake "dollars" when they speak to the teacher or friend in French, without being asked. Prizes will be awarded at the end of each term to all students, in the order of their dollar amount.

Reading- Last week we began a review of grade 2 basic letter/sound combinations. For example, "in" like in lapin (rabbit), "ou" as in hibou (owl) and "ai" as in maison (house). We will continue to review how to sound out these basic sounds for the next few weeks. Today, with help from their teacher, students selected their first leveled book for the French home reading program in zip lock bags. This is a level they can read independently for 15-20 minutes each night. Parents are encouraged to read the coaching cards and ask comprehension questions if possible. After reading, parents/guardians are asked to initial the reading log. For every five reading entries that are initialed, students received a check mark on our in-class incentive chart. Thank you for your support at home!

Writing- As part of our grade 3 program, students will now learn all the various ways to read and write each sound.  For our first grade 3 dictée, we are learning all the different ways to write the sound "é".The first one is "é", also written as és, ée, ées. ed, eds, ers, et, ai and ez. An example of each of these can be found among the dictée words.

Students are also learning about how to write a sentence with a capital letter and period. This week we will break down a sentence and look at the various parts such as nouns, adjectives and verbs.

Our English program will begin next week. You will see the English spelling test come home on Thursday or Friday this week. It will also get posted here in case it doesn't make it home or if your child is absent. I encourage students to practice spelling and/or dictée once each night for about 15-20 minutes.

Math

Last week we started our number sense unit. This means students are learning key counting strategies that are applied when adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. We begin by skip counting forwards and backwards by different amounts, rounding numbers and chunking them into groups of 5 and 10. This helps develop very important mental math counting abilities, especially when we use manipulatives such as dice, jelly beans, tokens and other objects. Practicing at home can also help reinforce what is being learned at school.

Science & Art

This fall we are learning all about what our solar system is made up of. Key elements from our new curriculum include matter, atoms, stars, moons and thermal energy sources such as the sun). This week we are starting with our sun and planets. On Friday we will integrate Science and Art by creating a collage of our solar system...let's not forget the sparkles! Students are excited to learn about Space:)

Social Studies, Indigenous Studies & Social Responsibility

Last week we began learning the significance of our 7 sacred Indigenous Teachings: Truth, Humility, Respect, Love, Wisdom, Bravery, Honesty. Our Aboriginal Assistant Pamela Bourque is hosting a thoughtful circle in our classroom to talk about the animals they represent, along with drumming and singing. Students are learning not only about Indigenous culture, but also how to adopt these teachings into our everyday lives.

Health and Physical Education (PE)

Students are getting into the routine of washing hands before snack and lunch. We've talked about how colds & flus are passed on, and how we can avoid spreading them. In the gym we are reviewing movement skills from grade two (running, jumping, catching, throwing) and how to apply them when playing cooperative games. Rules, teamwork and fair-play are part of the conversation when preparing to play these games.

Other special events to note for the week: Thursday is photo day, so if you have a preferred background colour, please return those forms by Thursday. Friday is Terry Fox Day, so students need to wear a pair of outdoor running shoes for our Terry Fox Run. Friday is also Orange Shirt Day. This is a new celebration day that honors residential school survivors. Students are encouraged to wear anything orange!

Have a wonderful week everyone and I hope you find this weekly blog informative!

Sincerely, Mme Garcin

Welcome families of Division 6 to the 2016/17 school year!

mardi, le 20 septembre 2016

Bonjour familles de Division 6!

This is our first dictée and it will be on Thursday, September 29th.

This dictée is based on the phonemic sound é, and can be spelled many ways:

é ed eds er és et ez ée and ai

A useful online tool is google translate, in case you want to look up the meaning of these words. Students were reminded today that capital letters and periods are very important when writing sentences correctly.

1. Léo est un bébé éléphant.

2. Il est un bébé géant.

3. Sa trompe est son nez.

4. Il a quatre grands pieds.

5. Léo aime bien jouer.

Week of June 6th - 10th, 2016

lundi le 6 juin 2016

Chers familles de Division 6,

We are wrapping things up this week! In French Language Arts, students are learning more about when to use the two past tenses: le passé composé and l'imparfait. Students have completed writing a story in the past tense and this week will be reading them to their classmates. They will practice oral reading and speaking, which includes voice posture, volume, tone, facial expressions, eye contact and timing. Gaining confidence in speaking a second language orally can be challenging and this is a wonderful opportunity for many students to practice. Last week and this week, students have been reading to their Kindergarten buddies. Their buddies are now also reading to them, which is another great way to build reading and oral language skills!

In English, grade 3's this week will work on reading comprehension a little more and practice their last spelling test. In Math, all students are reviewing concepts learned throughout the year such as basic arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply and divide) through a variety of games.

In Science, students are completing their English animal PowerPoint. Those who are finished will begin presenting them to the class. Students are doing some excellent research using the National Geographic for Kids website. Many are learning how to type, format, save, copy and paste. Others are learning to summarize information and write sentences using correct grammar. They are truly doing a great job.

In Art this week, students are creating gifts for loved ones, but this time it's a surprise! In PE, we are continuing with soccer and yoga.

Special Events this week include a visit from the Victoria Public Library about the Summer Reading Club. This is one way to encourage students to continue reading throughout the summer! We will also have an in-class workshop about the strength and stability of structures, provide by the non-profit organization, Science Venture. On Friday we have our field trip to Gyro Park and on Monday our field trip to Bamberton Beach. Students are asked to dress for rain or shine. See the handouts for more details on what to bring and wear.

This will be the last weekly blog for the year. PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL IF YOU READ THIS BLOG. I am curious to see how many parents read it and whether or not it is worthwhile continuing.

Have a wonderful summer everyone! It has been a real pleasure getting to know you, your families and children. In the future, don't be shy to come by the classroom and say hello! A special thank you to all parents and grand-parents who have helped us in the classroom and on field trips. We could not have done it without you!

Sincerely, Mme Garcin

Week of May 30th - June 3rd

lundi le 30 mai, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

We are getting close to the end of term 3. In French Language Arts, students are writing final good copies of their animals adventure. In grammar, students are learning the differences between the past tenses "passé composé" and "imparfait". They are continuing to read with their teacher one-on-one and you may see them bringing home a different leveled book for home reading. Some students are also reading their journal entries and stories aloud to practice and encourage greater Oral French fluency.

In Math, grade 2's are continuing to learn financial literacy. For example, how to say all the coin and cash values, and how to count them. Grade 2's will also apply their reading skills to word problems this week. Grade 3's are learning about the probability of an event occurring with the use of die. Grade 3's completed their term 3 test last week and this week are reviewing concepts such as multiplication, division and addition/subtraction of large number using the borrowing and take away strategies.

In English this week, grade 3 students are working on completing their story comprehension booklets. Many have also started an independent book report where they are reporting on the main characters and other story details. This report combines many different skills such as reading practice, comprehension, math (measuring the book) and art (drawing a picture of a main action or a character).

In Science and at the computer lab, students are working hard on their animal PowerPoint slide show. This is a Science research project using the National Geographic for Kids Animal Website. It is also an English writing activity and requires students to learn how to read text, find information and summarize it in their own words. Many PC computer skills are also being learned such as typing, formatting, saving documents, correcting, copying and pasting. Once they are complete, students will be presenting them to the class!

With extra field trips and in-school presentations, there will not be enough time for Social Studies or Art this week. In PE this week we have started yoga and will be doing soccer (hopefully outdoors if weather permits!). Ball handling skills learnd during the PISE program will be applied and practiced. Team building skills will also be incorporated into our soccer activities.

Special events this week include today's unveiling of our Booster Bench. This colorful bench is in the playground and is a place for students to build friendships. Students can go to this bench to find a playmate, seek support when feeling down, or be a supportive friend by giving someone else a boost. On Tuesday afternoon we have a "Rock the Arts" performance in the gym. On Friday afternoon, Stages Dance Company is coming to perform some professional dance routines!

Please make sure to hand in all Gyro Park permission forms by Tuesday and Bamberton forms by Friday. Have a wonderful week!

Mme Garcin

Week of May 24th - 27th 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

This week in French Language Arts, grade 2 students are reviewing common sight words. Grade 2 and 3 students are using their story outlines to write a draft. They are using their knowledge of vocabulary, using the word wall, referring to the dictionary, applying grammar rules and conjugating verbs. These drafts will be corrected and final versions will be written next week. Students who are finished their stories are reading them aloud to the class. All students get an opportunity to practice their oral reading and presentation skills as they finish their stories.

In Math, grade 2's are finishing a graphing and probability unit this week. Next they are learning about financial literacy, which is a new topic this year in the BC curriculum. In grade 3, students are continuing their geometry unit by learning about axes of symmetry. Later this week, they will get an introduction to probability using dice.

In English and Science, grade 2 and 3 students are writing a PowerPoint about an animal of their choice. In this process, they are learning to read text and summarize into simple and compound sentences. The Science portion of this assignment includes summarizing information about their animals' habitat, physical appearance, predator and prey, reproduction and interesting facts. Aside from this project, they are also reading short stories and answering comprehension questions. Once a week, students are allowed to read in English at school. Grade 3's are also encouraged to read often at home, especially by using their RAZ Kids account (audio books).

In PE this week, students had their last tennis lesson today. We will do a few more track activities later in the week. Next, we will do soccer and yoga until the rest of the year!

Instead of Art, we are going on a walking field this coming Friday May 27th, to Crystal Pool.  We are going to meet and swim with our Doncaster pen pals. Remember to pack your bathing suit and towel on Thursday evening.

Have a great week everyone!

Week of May 16th - 19th 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

In French Language Arts this week, students are writing a fictional story that includes an animal they have chosen from the National Geographic for Kids website. The beginning of their stories will include important introductory details such as who, what, when and where. The middle has a problem, and the end of the story has a solution. Students will first create an outline of ideas, followed by a draft and then a final copy. Students are now applying verbs in the present and past tense. Today, students spoke and wrote in their journals about what they did this weekend using verbs only in the past tense. In reading, students are continuing to read independently on a daily basis. They are also reading in smalls group once a week. As we are approaching the end of term three, students are each taking turns reading one-on-one with their teacher.

In grade 2 students are continuing their graphing practice and the probability of an event from occurring (statistics). In Math, grade 3's are continuing to learn how to describe and sort 2-D and 3-D shapes. New this week are axes of symmetry. Grade 3's are also reviewing the addition and subtraction of 2 and 3-digit numbers using the carry-over and borrowing strategies.

In Science, students have chosen an animal from the National Geographic for Kids website. This week in English and Science combined, all students will begin to create a PowerPoint slide show. It will include research and a summary about their animal habitat, physical features and choice of reproduction, predator & prey and fun facts. Towards the end of the year, students will present their slide shows in-class.

In PE, students are continuing to learn tennis skills such as the over hand and under hand techniques. They are also getting a lot of practice with their hand-eye coordination and positioning their bodies in order to hit the ball with a racket. We are also continuing outdoor track activities and will be doing relay this week.

Please note that this Friday May 20th is a Pro-D Day and Monday is the Victoria Day holiday. See you back at school on Tuesday, May 24th.

Week of May 9th - 13th, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

Another exciting week of learning has begun! In French Language Arts we are continuing to learn about the past tense and looking for it in a variety of texts such as books, pen pal letters and our journals. As students become familiar with the passé composé, they will also learn about another common past tense: l'imparfait. This past tense is used to describe what was going on in the past or during an ongoing event that is not yet completed (whereas the passé composé is used for a specific past event or succession of events that are complete). It is not always easy to figure out which past tense to use, so students will continue to learn about this in future grades. When identifying them in texts, remember that passé composé is always made up of two parts (J'ai mangé= I ate) and the imparfait is one part, often with an ai sound at the end (Je mangeais= I was eating). In Writing, our goal is to finish our pen pal letters this week and start writing a fictional story. In Reading, students are reading with me one-on-one. We are looking for verbs in the past tense as well as working on fluency and comprehension.

In Math this week, grade 2's are working on a graphing unit. They are learning 1-1 correspondence (for example one square on a line graph is equal to one person). They are also discussing the likelihood of events happening, which helps to interpret the graph and introduces the concept of statistics. In Grade 3, students are beginning a geometry unit where they will be learning about both 2D and 3D shapes.

In Science, last week we got our hands dirty and sifted through our worm bin to harvest our delicious soil. We created a new home for our worms using newspaper, cardboard, soil, sand, water and fresh food scraps. Our fresh soil was used for planting our vegetable starters, sent home for Mother's Day. Hopefully plants made it home safely and can now rest in a warm sunny window sill for a few more weeks. Make sure to give them plenty of water! Students also learned more about food webs today and the importance of both plants and animals. Students have also been shown how to create a PowerPoint presentation.  They will soon choosing an animal and habitat of their choice from the National Geographic for Kids website.

In Art this week, students are putting their Emily Carr painting on display in the gym. Come and see our school-wide Art and Book Show Open House display on Wednesday evening from 6-7pm. This week, students will create stone art. These can make wonderful paper weights and door stoppers!

In PE, students will continue their tennis lessons in the gym, and track & field activities outside. A reminder that whole school photos will be on Thursday, so students are encouraged to attend school if they can.

Have a wonderful week,

Mme Garcin

Grade 3 spelling: Thurs May 12th, 2016

2. We have to leave now.
3. It isn't easy to ride a horse.
4. Have you been to the park?
5. Park the car between the trees.

Monday 2 May 2016

Week of May 2nd - 6th 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

This week students are being introduced to the most commonly used past tense, le passé composé. We are starting with the verb aimer (to like). This tense is used with a past event that is complete at the time of speech. For example, "I liked that movie" is "J'ai aimé ce film". There are always two parts to the passé composé. Part 1 is the auxiliary verb être or avoir in the present tense (for example: J'ai or Je suis) and part 2 is the past participle of a verb (in this example "aimé"). Students will learn to apply this past tense in their writing. In Writing, students are now correcting a final copy of their pen pal letters. In Reading, students are doing one-on-one with me or the learning support teacher. Strategies we are working on are fluency, pronunciation and comprehension. Grade 2's are also doing a novel study with Mme Rolston.

In Math, both grade 2 & 3's are continuing to participate in the National Math competition, Number Rumble, offered by 10monkeys.com. Topics include questions about number logic, arithmetic, geometry and time. In Mme Rolston's class, students are reviewing their geometry unit and will soon begin graphing. In Grade 3, students are learning to convert metric measurements from kilometers to meters and millimeters. Later this week we will begin our geometry unit.

In Science, students are learning about animals and their habitats. We have talked about the forest, ocean, freshwater, desert and arctic environments and what the characteristics are of animals that live in these places. In the coming weeks, students will learn to create a PowerPoint slideshow about their chosen animal and habitat in the computer lab. They will learn to read information and summarize. In PE, students are continuing to learn tennis skills on Wednesdays. On other days, we are doing track. This week students will learn to do a relay using a baton.

In Art this week, we are learning about local artist, Emily Carr. We are going to see her original artwork on our field trip to the Art Gallery this Wednesday morning. On Thursday, we also have a special visiting band performance. Friday evening is Quadra's Got Talent, come have fun! BBQ is at 5:30 PM and the show starts at 7:00pm in the gym.

Have a great week,

Mme Garcin

Week of April 25th - 29th

Chers familles de Division 6,

This week in French Language Arts, students are continuing to write their response letters to their Doncaster pen pals. In their responses, students are writing about their likes, asking and answering questions, and applying the writing skills they have learned so far this year. Students are also reading aloud what they have learned about Owls. They are also reading in small groups once a week and individually on a daily basis. Students are encouraged to continue their daily 10-15 minutes of reading at home and record it on their reading logs.

In Math, grade 3 students are continuing their measurement unit. Today students have learned the metric units from kilometer to millimeter. For example, how many meters are in a kilometer? They are also measuring objects in the classroom using different tools such as a meter stick, a ruler and a tape measure. In grade 2, students are continuing to learn about geometric shapes.

In English, grade 3's this week at continuing to develop their reading and comprehension skills. They are writing full sentence answers and applying the grammar they learned throughout the first and second term. By the way, the weekly spelling list is always posted at https://www.spellingcity.com/egarcin/. This is a fun way to practice spelling from home! Our weekly spelling test is on Thursday.

In Science this week students have observed, drawn and written about their seed germination. Many have planted their germinating seed. Later this week or next week, we will transfer our plants into small pots using the soil from our classroom worm bin compost. When students bring their vegetable plants home, make sure to place them indoors in a sunny window with plenty of water for a few weeks. Once they are about 1foot tall or bigger, they can be planted in a garden!

In PE, students are continuing their tennis lessons. Outside, we will also start doing some track activities. Students will learn the difference between long distance running and 100 meter sprinting.

On Thursday April 28th at 1pm, families are invited to the Quadra gym to watch the Intermediate concert (grade 3, 4 and 5's). Some of our grade 3 choir students will be performing! On Friday afternoon is our Jump Rope for Heart event, a fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The whole school will be outside jumping with skipping ropes. Week of Apr 18th - 21st, 2016

Chers familles de Division 6,

This week in French Language Arts, students are continuing to write their pen pal letters. Last week students learned how to write a negative sentence and they will continue to do apply this new knowledge. For example, they are applying the negative sentence structure when writing about whether or not their seed is germinating. Grade 2's with Mme Rolston will be learning to speak, read and write "About Me". For example, describing what they look like and their preferences. All students are reading daily in small group or individually. Daily home reading is also encouraged!

Both grade 2 and 3 students are continuing to participate in our National Math competition- Number Rumble! We are in the computer lab daily answering questions about numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time and geometry. In grade 2 Math, students are beginning a geometry unit. Today they built 3-D geometric shapes with toothpicks and mini-marshmallows! Grade 3's are continuing their measurement unit. This week we will be measuring our height and a variety of classroom objects in centimeters and inches. We will keep our height measurements posted in class until June and re-measure ourselves to see who much we can grow in 3 months!

In Science today, students were excited to see their seeds germinating. Some already have roots. We are observing, drawing and recording these changes over time. In Social Studies, some students are finishing their talking sticks. We are having some important discussions about speaking and listening, especially taking turns. Students will bring home their talking sticks after their conference tomorrow and Wednesday. Mrs Bourque will be coming in again soon to do some more First Nations Art, hopefully this Friday. On Thursday, we will have a very special guest and experienced storyteller, Jennifer Ferris. She has a strong connection to the history of Vancouver Island and is able to engage young audiences with her stories.

In English, grade 3's this week are continuing to read and answers comprehension questions. Also, students who volunteer will be presenting their Flat Stanley Projects to the class. In PE, students are continuing weekly tennis lessons. We will also be going outside to take advantage of the nice weather by doing some track and field activities. Some of our grade 3's have signed up to participate in the annual track and field events offered to grade 3, 4 and 5's.

Please note, school is dismissed at 11:50 am Tuesday and Wednesday this week for student-led conferences. I look forward to seeing all of you there! Also, Friday is a Pro-D and therefore no school for students.

Enjoy the great weather,

Elise Garcin

Week of Apr 11th - 15th

Chers familles de Division 6,

This week in French Language Arts, students are learning to write a negative sentence which in French we call "la négation". This includes two parts 1) "ne" and 2) "pas". They always go before and after the verb. If the verb begins with a vowel, the e is dropped in the "ne" and becomes "n' " to avoid 2 vowels from being together. For example, "He is scared" becomes "He is not scared". In French this translates to "Il a peur" and "Il n'a pas peur". Today we read our pen pal letters from Doncaster and this week we'll being drafting our response letters. This is where we integrate many different grammar rules we are learning, such as subject verb agreements, masculine/feminine articles, singular/plural nouns, sentence structure, punctuation such as questions and exclamation marks and now negation. While grade 3's study English, grade 2's are doing a French novel study with Mme Roslton. This focuses on reading and reading comprehension strategies.

In Math, both grade 2's and 3's are participating in a Canada-wide math competition called Number Rumble! We are going to the computer lab once a day and this program includes questions about number recognition, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, money, word problems, geometry and time. You can go to www.10monkeys.com and "try for free" to see what it's like. Grade 2's have started a measurement unit with Mme Roslton. In grade 3, students are learning how to measure the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes with a ruler using different units such as mm, cm, m and even inches.

In English, grade 3 students this week are putting their Flat Stanley Projects together and continuing to read short stories and answer in full sentences. In Science, students are germinating bean, tomato, cucumber and lettuce seeds. We hope they sprout by the time our student-led conferences begin next week! Today we talked about the 3 things our seeds will need to grow: soil, water and sun. In combination with Social Studies and Art, students are creating a talking stick and learning about the importance of listening and taking turns when speaking. We will learn the Aboriginal origins and use of the talking stick on Friday when new have a visit with Pamela Bourque, our Aboriginal learning support teacher.

In PE this week, we are learning more tennis skills, such as holding a racket, balancing a ball and hitting a ball. This is a great sport for developing hand-eye coordination.

Our term 3 library block is now on Thursday's, so please return or renew library books every Thursday morning from now until the end of June. Note that next week on Tues April 19th and 20th we have student-led conferences. School is dismissed at 11:50am on both these days. I will be sending home a confirmation time for your visit this week.

Looking ahead, our next field trip with be on the morning of Wednesday May 4th to the Victoria Art Gallery. Please submit $2.50 (or $5.00 to help sponsor another child in the class) by the end of this week. I am still looking for one volunteer to accompany us by bus, please email me if you can join us.

Thanks for your support at home and have a great week!

Week of April 5th - 8th 2016

mardi le 5 avril 2016

Dear Div 6 families,

This week in Language Arts, students are back into a routine with a dictée. New words and sentences were introduced today and students practice them once by writing them in their agendas and reading them out loud. They will practice their dictée again on Thursday, and the dictée this week is on Friday. In groups of two, one becomes the teacher and the other the student. Then they switch roles in practicing and correcting each other. Most students use mini chalk boards and chalk to practice their dictée (and some prefer paper and pencils). This helps them learn new vocabulary in a more fun and hands-on way. Students read on a daily basis and we will be finding a new term 3 weekly library visit towards the end of this week. Grade 2's are continuing a French novel study with Mme Rolston.

In English, grade 3's are handing in their Flat Stanley projects. They will also be continuing to read short stories and answering comprehension questions in full sentences. If time permits, the teacher will read some of Flat Stanley's other adventures that have been published as a whole series. Students are encouraged to borrow these short novels from the library!

In Math, grade 3 students are reviewing time, money, multiplication and fractions with the use of fun manipulatives such as mini-clocks, bingo, cards and foam pie pieces. If time permits, students will be given an introduction to calculating a perimeter. This is the part of our measurement unit for term 3. Grade 2's are continuing their program with Mme Rolston, which is reviewing addition strategies to 100 and starting subtraction to 100.

In combination with Art and Science, students are making owl art. Come see them in our classroom! Later this week, we will start to germinate seeds so that we can grow plants in the classroom using our rich worm bin soil. In Social Studies, we will soon be learning about local First Nations cultures with some visits of our Quadra Aboriginal liaison, Mrs Bourque. For example, we will soon be learning the art of listening and speaking by making creative talking sticks and talking about the importance of good communication.

Note your calendars that Friday is Twin Spirit day! If possible, please send a small (optional) cash donation to help raise money for local charity. Students care encouraged to find a friend at school to dress the same as.

Have a great week everyone,

Mme Garcin

Week of March 29th - April 1st 2016

mardi le 29 mars, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

Welcome back to school! In French Language Arts today, students shared what they did during Spring Break, then wrote about it in their journals. Later in the day, some participated in small group reading while others did individual reading. Their afternoon Science presentation about owls was also in French. The next dictée will be on Thursday April 7th and it will be sent home and posted on Thursday this week. While Grade 3's study English with me, Grade 2's will begin a French novel study with Mme Rolston. More details to come.

In Math, grade 3's learned a new addition and multiplication card game. Grade 2's are continuing their program with Mme Rolston. This week they are reviewing addition strategies to 100 and starting subtraction to 100. In Science, we have started an owl unit with a special presentation from the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary. Students learned about 7 types of owls including their names, sizes and sounds. There were stuffed specimens, feathers, bones and body parts to touch. They also did an owl pellet dissection. This allowed students to discover first hand what owls eat. Using a sorting chart, the various parts of their rodent prey such as hair and bones are sorted and glued for display. Very fun and engaging stuff!

In English this week, Grade 3's will be reading short stories and answering comprehension questions with full sentences. Flat Stanley stories will be read at the carpet as projects come in. These projects are due Monday April 4th and students are asked to submit 3 things: 1) 5-8 photographs with Flat Stanley on his/her adventures, 2) a corrected, final copy write-up either 1-page in length OR 2-5 sentences describing each photo, 3) a blank poster board. Students are asked to put their name on all these items and we will be gluing them together in-class. I will provide extra glue and paper for students who need it. If you cannot print the photos, you can email me up to 5 photos and I can print them on black & white regular paper

In Arts, students did a drama activity with their replacement teacher. They also learned to make corner bookmarks using paper folding techniques. In Gym this week, students will start tennis lessons on Wednesdays. They will also have the PISE gym program for two more weeks on Fridays.

Please remember to sign and return empty report card envelopes. We can re-use them for term 3. I was away sick today and hope to be back as soon as possible.

Have a wonderful week,

Mme Garcin

Monday 7 March 2016

Week of Mar 7th - 11th

Chers familles de Division 6,

It's already our last week before Spring Break! In Language Arts, students are practicing their French oral language and public speaking skills as they present their family artifact and speech (due tomorrow which is Tuesday, March 8th). In reading, students continue daily individual reading and a weekly small group guided reading session. Students are encouraged to go to their local public library and continue to read often during the holidays. In writing and grammar, grade 2's continue to practice how to read common sight words using phonics. All students are learning how to conjugate regular verbs in the present tense that end in -ir and -re. They are regular because many -ir and -re ending verbs are conjugated with the same endings and therefore can be memorized. For example, regular -ir verbs include: choisir, finir, réussir, obéir, grossir, maigrir. Regular -re verbs include: attendre, prendre, répondre, vendre. Note that the verb avoir ends in -ir,  and aller ends in -er, but are irregular verbs because they do not follow the regular -ir and -er verbs endings, therefore they have been/are being memorized separately.

It is highly recommended that by grade 4, students own their own French verb conjugation reference guide, which is called a bescherelle. It is published by Éditions Hurtubise and "L'art de conjuguer" is the one with 12,000 verb conjugations in all tenses (present, past, future, etc). Most bookstores sell them and they are an invaluable writing tool. Below is an example of a regular -ir and -re verb in the present tense.

Choisir

Je choisis
Tu choisis
Il/Elle choisit
Nous choisissons
Vous choisissons
Ils/Elles choisissent

Attendre

J'attends
Tu attends
Il/Elle attend
Nous attendons
Vous attendez
Ils/Elles attendent

In Math, grade 2's this week are learning to add large numbers to 100 using the regrouping technique (eg. 23 is 20+3 or 10+10+3). In grade 3, students are continuing to learn about basic fractions with an introduction to decimals. We are comparing decimals to money by learning to convert a fraction with 10 parts into a decimal (eg. 3/10 equals 0.3).

In English, students are completing their grammar booklet by writing sentences using various parts of speech (subject, verb, adjective, adverb, ect). This booklet will come home and can be completed and returned to school for as sticker if parents/guardians can view it to make sure it is complete before coming back to school. Students have completed their novel study of Stuart Little, yay! Now we will begin reading short stories more independently and answering comprehension questions. This week, students will be introduced to the story of Flat Stanley, a little boy who was flattened by a bulletin board, who can now visit his friends by traveling by mail in an envelope. Look out for a description of our Grade 3 Flat Stanley adventure project coming home for Spring Break.

In Science and Art, students will be continuing their wildflower pastel drawings they began last Friday. We are learning to identify many local flowers and are discussing the importance they play in our local ecosystem. When we get back from Spring Break, we will plant vegetables seeds and watch them sprout in the classroom. In Social Studies, we are continuing our Canadian province book tour and are now in the Prairies. Last week we learned all about our maritime provinces, along with Quebec and Ontario. Many personal connections were made with our family artifacts, such as a war medal and maple syrup bucket from Ontario and an old family photo from Quebec.

Friday is our last day before Spring Break and is crazy hat and hair day! Students are encouraged to wear something creative on their heads and bring an optional donation for our chosen charity, War Amps. Students will also be bringing home term 2 report cards. Parents are asked to sign and return the empty envelope to school after Spring Break, for term 3 reports.

Many thanks for all your support at home for term 2. Have a wonderful holiday, St-Patrick's Day and Easter weekend. See you back at school Tuesday, March 29th 2016!

Mme Garcin

No dictée this week

Dear Div 6 families,

There is no dictée this week. Instead, students are asked to prepare a family artifact and French speech by Tuesday March 8th. Presentations will take place next week from March 8th-11th.

Monday 29 February 2016

Week of Feb 29th - Mar 4th, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

This week, students are practicing their French Oral language and speaking skills by reading their stories and other completed work. A clear voice, eye contact, posture and volume are some of the public speaking skills we are working on. Also, students came home with a speech and family artifact assignment last week. This is due Tuesday March 8th, or anytime beforehand. Students are asked to bring a family artifact and a polished speech using the fill-in-the-blank handout provided (a copy was also emailed as an attachment in case you need to print one from home). These speeches will be presented from March 8th to 11th, which is our last week before Spring Break.

In French grammar, students are reviewing the irregular verbs avoir, être and aller in the present tense. Within the next few weeks, students are learning to conjugate regular verbs with -er, -ir and -re endings (for example marcher, sentir and entrer) in the present tense. These verbs are regular because they have the same endings within each of their categories. For example, all regular -er verbs (except irregular verbs such as aller) have the following bolded endings when the -er ending is removed (using marcher and parler as an example). I will provide -ir and -re verb endings next week.

marcher

Je marche
Tu marches
Il/Elle marche
Nous marchons
Vous marchez
Ils/Elles marchent

parler

Je parle
Tu parles
Il/Elle parle
Nous parlons
Vous parlez
Ils/Elles parlent

In English, grade 3 students are working hard to finish their English grammar booklets. The last topic to cover before Spring Break are verbs. Two types we are learning are action verbs, which tell what a person or thing does. The other type is a helping verb, which is used with an action verb. For example in the sentence "The driver should have turned the wheel", 'should have' is the helping verb and 'turned' is the action verb (also known as the main verb and usually comes last). Students will practice writing sentences using everything they have learned so far. This includes verbs, adjectives, contractions, adverbs, nouns, homonyms, suffixes and prefixes. In Reading, we have 3 chapters left of our novel study "Stuart Little". While we read, students are learning Oral reading skills such as fluency, expression, predicting, phrasing and thinking aloud in order to increase their comprehension.

In Math, Grade 2's are continuing to add and subtract numbers to 100. Grade 3's are getting an introduction to fractions. Today students learned the terminology of the top number (le nominateur), also known as the part, and the bottom number (le dénominateur), also known as the whole. We will continue to practice multiplication, division, counting money and reading a 24-hour clock through a variety of games.

In Social Studies this week, we are travelling across Canada during our magic carpet reading time. Today we read about Newfoundland and Labrador and learned about its history, culture and symbols. We learned that a grandparent of a student in this class lives in Newfoundland! We look forward to sharing our family artifacts and speeches to find our where our family backgrounds are from in Canada and the rest of the world. In Science this week, we are going for a walk to Summit Park in search of local wildflowers and other signs of spring. We will integrate Art by using pastels to draw native wildflowers and learn the technique of blending colours with our fingers.

Last week in PE, students played an active game called "Ship to Shore" designed to help develop listening skills and following instructions (such as running, rowing and laying down). They also learned some soccer skills such as stopping and controlling a ball. On Thursday we will hike up to the top of Summit Park. We also continue to do regular daily exercise such as running and outdoor play to maintain health and focus.

Have a great week everyone,

Mme Garcin

In Oral Language, students will share their observations and impressions of our special field trip to the Victoria Symphony Orchestra at the University of Victoria auditorium today (Monday). Students are continuing to read, share and correct our stories into a final draft. We will practice out dictée at least once and guided reading groups will continue in the afternoons. In grammar we are reviewing the present tense of the verbs avoir (to have) and être (to be). Later in the week will we also review aller (to go) and the regular -er verb manger (to eat). Here they are listed below for easy practice and review at home.

In Math, Grade 2's are adding and subtracting numbers to 100 using ten blocks. In Grade 3, students are continuing to learn how to read a 24 hours clock, count money and review multiplication and division. As term 2 comes to an end, we will have a quiz later this week covering these 4 topics. Math booklets will be coming home soon. Students who complete and correct these at home and have parents check them, can return them to school for a sticker.

In English, Grade 3's will continue to develop their reading comprehension and fluency skills through our novel study and by reading on their RAZ Kids online programs. In grammar, students will continue to learn about adverbs and be introduced to helping verbs. Students will practice writing and building simple and compound sentences with all the important parts of speech they have been learning throughout the term.

By combining Social Studies and Art, students are completing their Inuksuks this week and putting them on display in the classroom . We will have an art appreciation activity so that students can provide detailed positive feedback about each others art.

Wednesday is Pink Shirt Day, also known as anti-bullying day. This is an opportunity to celebrate  and discuss each others differences and promote positive relationships. Thursday morning we have a school assembly, therefore students are invited to wear pink on both Wednesday and Thursday!

Have a colorful week! Mme Garcin
