Week of May 30th - June 3rd

lundi le 30 mai, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

We are getting close to the end of term 3. In French Language Arts, students are writing final good copies of their animals adventure. In grammar, students are learning the differences between the past tenses "passé composé" and "imparfait". They are continuing to read with their teacher one-on-one and you may see them bringing home a different leveled book for home reading. Some students are also reading their journal entries and stories aloud to practice and encourage greater Oral French fluency.

In Math, grade 2's are continuing to learn financial literacy. For example, how to say all the coin and cash values, and how to count them. Grade 2's will also apply their reading skills to word problems this week. Grade 3's are learning about the probability of an event occurring with the use of die. Grade 3's completed their term 3 test last week and this week are reviewing concepts such as multiplication, division and addition/subtraction of large number using the borrowing and take away strategies.

In English this week, grade 3 students are working on completing their story comprehension booklets. Many have also started an independent book report where they are reporting on the main characters and other story details. This report combines many different skills such as reading practice, comprehension, math (measuring the book) and art (drawing a picture of a main action or a character).

In Science and at the computer lab, students are working hard on their animal PowerPoint slide show. This is a Science research project using the National Geographic for Kids Animal Website. It is also an English writing activity and requires students to learn how to read text, find information and summarize it in their own words. Many PC computer skills are also being learned such as typing, formatting, saving documents, correcting, copying and pasting. Once they are complete, students will be presenting them to the class!

With extra field trips and in-school presentations, there will not be enough time for Social Studies or Art this week. In PE this week we have started yoga and will be doing soccer (hopefully outdoors if weather permits!). Ball handling skills learnd during the PISE program will be applied and practiced. Team building skills will also be incorporated into our soccer activities.

Special events this week include today's unveiling of our Booster Bench. This colorful bench is in the playground and is a place for students to build friendships. Students can go to this bench to find a playmate, seek support when feeling down, or be a supportive friend by giving someone else a boost. On Tuesday afternoon we have a "Rock the Arts" performance in the gym. On Friday afternoon, Stages Dance Company is coming to perform some professional dance routines!

Please make sure to hand in all Gyro Park permission forms by Tuesday and Bamberton forms by Friday. Have a wonderful week!
