Week of Oct 28 - Nov 1

lundi le 28 octobre, 2013

Happy Halloween! This is a busy week in Kindergarten. In language arts, the colours are orange and black and we are learning to write the letter A and a. We are learning French Halloween vocabulary such as une araignée (a spider), un hibou (an owl) and une citrouille (a pumpkin). In science and art, we are continuing to learn the growth stages of the pumpkin with the help of books and sequencing cards. We will also be carving a real pumpkin as we learn facial expressions and emotions (eg. happy, sad, scared, worried). We will also be talking about Halloween safety. In PE, we have started a fun dance unit. In class we are introducing Brain Gym in our morning routine, a series of fun exercises that help prepare our brains for reading and writing.

Tuesday is library day, Wednesday we are walking to the local seniors home and Thursday is our usual neighborhood walk with Mme Koski and Mme Amber's class. Thursday is also a school-wide orange and black day which means students are encouraged to wear these colours! We ask students not to wear their Halloween costumes to school and save them for after school to avoid loosing or breaking them at school. Remember to eat a healthy diner on Thursday evening, a hearty breakfast on Friday morning and drink lots of water!

Have a fun and safe Halloween, boo!

Mme Elise

Week of October 21-24

lundi le 22 octobre, 2013

Dear families,

Here are our plans for this week. We are continuing activities related to the colour orange. For example, today we created orange sculptures using orange play dough. Thank you to one of our family volunteers for making this! This week is our school-wide write, therefore we will be using fall images to draw and write our first sentences using "Je vois" (I see) as our sentence stem. In science, we are going to learn all about the growth phases of the pumpkin through storytelling and sequencing activities. In math, we are continuing to learn how to count up to 20 in French.

Tuesday is library day! Please remind your child to put their library book back in their backpacks on Monday evenings so that they can borrow a new one every week. Students can choose from a variety of English and French books to ensure their joy of reading is ignited! Reading this book to your child, or asking an older sibling to read it to them, can be very beneficial in their progress at school.

Wednesday students are dismissed at 11:50 am and buses leave at 12:05 pm. Parent / teacher meetings are scheduled for 15 minutes each from 1:00 pm-6:00 pm so please be punctual. Check your child's backpack for your scheduled time. If you are unable to find your scheduled time, email me at ehoefer@sd61.bc.ca. It is recommended that you find child care during the meeting. If the classroom door is closed when you arrive, have a seat in the hallway. When your appointment time begins, please knock on the door as this will help us stay on schedule. I look forward to meeting all of you again!

Also, Friday is a PRO-D therefore no school on Friday. Have a wonderful week!

Mme Elise

Week of October 15-18th

mardi le 15 octobre, 2013

Joyeuse Action de grâce! Happy Thanksgiving!

This week our colour is orange (same in French- orange!). We are also continuing to practice counting to 20, singing the alphabet in French and writing our names. This week we will practice writing our last names too! In math, we are learning to create patterns with more than 2 variables, for example ABC and ABB. In science we are doing some apple taste testing with red, green and yellow apples. We are also graphing our preferred apples. We are continuing to learn calendar vocabulary such as days of the week (lundi, mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi, samedi et dimanche), and months.

Last week our neigbourhood walk went really well and we are going to continue doing this weekly on Thursday mornings. We are also going to continue practicing our new recycling skills thanks to last weeks presentation from CRD parks.

On Wednesday October 23rd will be parent/teacher meetings. Please return the appointment forms sent home last Thursday and I will be sending home a confirmation time. Students will be dismissed at 11:50am and busses will be here to drive students to their usual place.

Passe une très belle semaine,

Mme Elise

Week of October 8th-12th

lundi le 8 octobre, 2013

Bonjour!

October is already here and we are doing all sorts of fun fall activities! We have been taking nature walks, collecting and drying leaves and learning about the colours yellow and brown. Today we traced our dried leaves and wrote our names with cheerios. We also looked at different kinds of patterns we find in our environment and began counting all the way up to 20 in French. We are also going to continue practicing our French alphabet and letter sounds.

I have added an October calendar in each student's duotang. It includes fun 'homework' activities for every day of the month. This is optional, but please do a star or check mark if your child is doing it. This can really help complement and solidify what they are learning in school, at home and in their community.

Many students in the class are expressing interest in having a blanket for quiet time. If your child would like to bring a SMALL blanket or towel to school, they are more than welcome.

This week is brown week! Many of our activities will be related to this theme. Every Tuesday is library week (students are showing a keen interest in their books!) Please help remind your child to return their book Tuesday morning, otherwise they have to wait until the following Tuesday to borrow. On Friday we have a special recycling presentation from CRD parks. Students are learning how to reduce, reuse and recycle!

Take care everyone,  Mme Elise
