Week of June 6th - 10th, 2016

lundi le 6 juin 2016

Chers familles de Division 6,

We are wrapping things up this week! In French Language Arts, students are learning more about when to use the two past tenses: le passé composé and l'imparfait. Students have completed writing a story in the past tense and this week will be reading them to their classmates. They will practice oral reading and speaking, which includes voice posture, volume, tone, facial expressions, eye contact and timing. Gaining confidence in speaking a second language orally can be challenging and this is a wonderful opportunity for many students to practice. Last week and this week, students have been reading to their Kindergarten buddies. Their buddies are now also reading to them, which is another great way to build reading and oral language skills!

In English, grade 3's this week will work on reading comprehension a little more and practice their last spelling test. In Math, all students are reviewing concepts learned throughout the year such as basic arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply and divide) through a variety of games.

In Science, students are completing their English animal PowerPoint. Those who are finished will begin presenting them to the class. Students are doing some excellent research using the National Geographic for Kids website. Many are learning how to type, format, save, copy and paste. Others are learning to summarize information and write sentences using correct grammar. They are truly doing a great job.

In Art this week, students are creating gifts for loved ones, but this time it's a surprise! In PE, we are continuing with soccer and yoga.

Special Events this week include a visit from the Victoria Public Library about the Summer Reading Club. This is one way to encourage students to continue reading throughout the summer! We will also have an in-class workshop about the strength and stability of structures, provide by the non-profit organization, Science Venture. On Friday we have our field trip to Gyro Park and on Monday our field trip to Bamberton Beach. Students are asked to dress for rain or shine. See the handouts for more details on what to bring and wear.

This will be the last weekly blog for the year. PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL IF YOU READ THIS BLOG. I am curious to see how many parents read it and whether or not it is worthwhile continuing.

Have a wonderful summer everyone! It has been a real pleasure getting to know you, your families and children. In the future, don't be shy to come by the classroom and say hello! A special thank you to all parents and grand-parents who have helped us in the classroom and on field trips. We could not have done it without you!

Sincerely, Mme Garcin
