Week of Feb 29th - Mar 4th, 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

This week, students are practicing their French Oral language and speaking skills by reading their stories and other completed work. A clear voice, eye contact, posture and volume are some of the public speaking skills we are working on. Also, students came home with a speech and family artifact assignment last week. This is due Tuesday March 8th, or anytime beforehand. Students are asked to bring a family artifact and a polished speech using the fill-in-the-blank handout provided (a copy was also emailed as an attachment in case you need to print one from home). These speeches will be presented from March 8th to 11th, which is our last week before Spring Break.

In French grammar, students are reviewing the irregular verbs avoir, être and aller in the present tense. Within the next few weeks, students are learning to conjugate regular verbs with -er, -ir and -re endings (for example marcher, sentir and entrer) in the present tense. These verbs are regular because they have the same endings within each of their categories. For example, all regular -er verbs (except irregular verbs such as aller) have the following bolded endings when the -er ending is removed (using marcher and parler as an example). I will provide -ir and -re verb endings next week.

marcher

Je marche
Tu marches
Il/Elle marche
Nous marchons
Vous marchez
Ils/Elles marchent

parler

Je parle
Tu parles
Il/Elle parle
Nous parlons
Vous parlez
Ils/Elles parlent

In English, grade 3 students are working hard to finish their English grammar booklets. The last topic to cover before Spring Break are verbs. Two types we are learning are action verbs, which tell what a person or thing does. The other type is a helping verb, which is used with an action verb. For example in the sentence "The driver should have turned the wheel", 'should have' is the helping verb and 'turned' is the action verb (also known as the main verb and usually comes last). Students will practice writing sentences using everything they have learned so far. This includes verbs, adjectives, contractions, adverbs, nouns, homonyms, suffixes and prefixes. In Reading, we have 3 chapters left of our novel study "Stuart Little". While we read, students are learning Oral reading skills such as fluency, expression, predicting, phrasing and thinking aloud in order to increase their comprehension.

In Math, Grade 2's are continuing to add and subtract numbers to 100. Grade 3's are getting an introduction to fractions. Today students learned the terminology of the top number (le nominateur), also known as the part, and the bottom number (le dénominateur), also known as the whole. We will continue to practice multiplication, division, counting money and reading a 24-hour clock through a variety of games.

In Social Studies this week, we are travelling across Canada during our magic carpet reading time. Today we read about Newfoundland and Labrador and learned about its history, culture and symbols. We learned that a grandparent of a student in this class lives in Newfoundland! We look forward to sharing our family artifacts and speeches to find our where our family backgrounds are from in Canada and the rest of the world. In Science this week, we are going for a walk to Summit Park in search of local wildflowers and other signs of spring. We will integrate Art by using pastels to draw native wildflowers and learn the technique of blending colours with our fingers.

Last week in PE, students played an active game called "Ship to Shore" designed to help develop listening skills and following instructions (such as running, rowing and laying down). They also learned some soccer skills such as stopping and controlling a ball. On Thursday we will hike up to the top of Summit Park. We also continue to do regular daily exercise such as running and outdoor play to maintain health and focus.

Have a great week everyone,

Mme Garcin

Students are continuing to read, share and correct our stories into a final draft. We will practice out dictée at least once and guided reading groups will continue in the afternoons. In grammar we are reviewing the present tense of the verbs avoir (to have) and être (to be). Later in the week will we also review aller (to go) and the regular -er verb manger (to eat). In Math, Grade 2's are adding and subtracting numbers to 100 using ten blocks. In Grade 3, students are continuing to learn how to read a 24 hours clock, count money and review multiplication and division. As term 2 comes to an end, we will have a quiz later this week covering these 4 topics. Math booklets will be coming home soon. Students who complete and correct these at home and have parents check them, can return them to school for a sticker.

In English, Grade 3's will continue to develop their reading comprehension and fluency skills through our novel study and by reading on their RAZ Kids online programs. In grammar, students will continue to learn about adverbs and be introduced to helping verbs. Students will practice writing and building simple and compound sentences with all the important parts of speech they have been learning throughout the term.

By combining Social Studies and Art, students are completing their Inuksuks this week and putting them on display in the classroom . We will have an art appreciation activity so that students can provide detailed positive feedback about each others art.

Wednesday is Pink Shirt Day, also known as anti-bullying day. This is an opportunity to celebrate  and discuss each others differences and promote positive relationships. Thursday morning we have a school assembly, therefore students are invited to wear pink on both Wednesday and Thursday!

Have a colorful week! Mme Garcin

Week of February 15th - 18th 2016

Chers familles de Division 6,

In French Language Arts this week, students are continuing to share and read the stories they have written. Students who are volunteering to share their stories are modelling public speaking skills such as a loud, clear voice, eye contact and an open posture. We will also reviewing common French writing mistakes made with grammar, punctuation spelling and sentence structure using our overhead projector. Students can then write their final drafts so that we can make a classroom book of our adventure stories! In reading, students are continuing guided reading groups based on their reading levels.

In English, grade 3's are preparing for their spelling test this Thursday. These students are encouraged to go on spellingcity.com/egarcin for practice. Grade 2's are welcome to challenge the spelling test from now on. They will be marked, but marks will not be counted on report cards. For reading practice, grade 3's are also encouraged to log onto their Raz Kids student account on a regular basis. Once we finish our group novel study of Stuart Little, we will be doing more independent reading that will be followed by comprehension questions. Reading, reading and reading is the single most important thing students can do at home to support their learning at home. In grammar this week, we will review adverbs.

In Math this week, grade 2's are learning to add and subtract 8. Grade 3's are continuing to learn how to read a 24 hour clock and count money. We are now nearing the end of term 2, therefore grade 3's will be bringing home their term 2 multiplication and division booklets soon. Some have corrections and incomplete pages. If students are able to complete/correct them and parents are able to check that they are, students can return them before spring break for a sticker.

In Social Studies, students will continue to learn how to use reference materials such as atlases and maps in order to find information. Some will be completing their report on a chosen Canadian province by finding and illustrating its various symbols. In Science, students are sharing what they learned on our plant tour with Mark Albany. Students are given time to share their work in order to promote oral language and further develop public speaking skills.

In Art last week, we started our Inuit Inuksuks by painting our stones. This week we will talk about virtues that are important to us and write one on each of our stones. Finally, we will glue them together to create a unique and personal piece of art. In PE last week, all students participated in the PISE program in the gym. Students were practicing their running, stopping, jumping and balancing skills. Students also did a self-reflection of their physical abilities. These will be included in term 2 report cards.

Please note that for the next two weeks, being on-time and present at school will be important as we do review and assessments of our term 2 topics. School supplies are running low. Pencils, erasers and an enclosed pencils sharpener is something most students currently need (no mechanical pencils please). Also, mark your calendars- there is no school this Friday, February 19th for our monthly Pro-D.

On Monday February 22nd, in the afternoon, we will be going by school bus to UVIC for a Victoria Symphony concert field trip. I am still looking for one more parent to join us. If you can volunteer, please email me.

Many thanks for all your support at home!

Mme Garcin

Tuesday 9 February 2016

Week of Feb 9th - 12th

Chers familles de Division 6,

This week in French Language Arts, students are reviewing the present tense of the irregular verb aller (to go). Students are also finishing their stories about an adventure in Canada's North. Some students are volunteering to read their stories aloud in front of the class, which is encouraging others to do the same. Two or three stories will be selected among volunteers to use as a read-aloud example of how to correct grammar, punctuation, meaning and structure of each sentence using our projector screen. This teaches students how to find their mistakes and fix them. We are specifically looking at sentence structure and word endings with a subject (noun or pronoun), conjugated verb and a predicate (un compliment). Good news, we now have more learning support time with Mr MacDonald. We can now continue to do more guided reading groups throughout the week. Also, keep up your daily French reading and home everyone!

In Math, grade 3's are continuing to learn simple division. We have also started to learn how to read a clock using mini handheld clocks. Students are encouraged to wear a watch to school this week if they have one. Once they have the basics down, they will be learning the 24 hour clock. For example, 1:30pm is written and said as 13h30 (h is heures). Grade 3's are also beginning to count money using a fun bingo game and play money. Grade 2's are working their way through all their addition and subtraction numbers 0 -9. Last week they practiced adding and subtracting 9. This week they are subtracting using problem solving techniques. Watch for a test coming home Wednesday. Mme Rolston and I encourage lots of practical practice at home and in the community whenever the opportunity arises. For example, you can ask your child to count the change in your wallet or add and subtract the food on your plate during dinner time. Math is fun!

In English, grade 3's will be introduced to adverbs and we will continue our novel study of Stuart Little. Last week students were very successful at identifying and finding adjectives in our story! Remember to practice reading in English at home, then talking about it. After our novel we will be doing reading and comprehension exercises. I hope all grade 3's are using the RAZ Kids online reading program. Please ensure your child is following the correct log in information and selecting their specifically assigned student number.

In Social Studies today, students are learning to use reference materials such as books and atlases to find information on a Canadian province or territory. Students are learning about different symbols such as flags, birds, coats of arms and flowers. Students are also learning to find locations on a map based on north, south, east and west directional intructions.

In Science this week, we will review what we learned with Mark Albany on our plant walk at Beacon Hill park by talking, drawing and writing about it.

In Art, students are creating thoughtful art cards for Valentine's Day. To tie into our learning of the Canadian northern Inuit culture, this week or next we will be creating an Inuksuk structure using real stones. We will discuss the importance of balance in our lives with family and friends who are here to help us find our way. Each stone will be carefully chosen to represent virtues we like (such as kindness, sharing and patience) that come together to create our happiness.

Friday is red and white clothing day! In celebration of Valentines Day, students are welcome to exchange their cards this afternoon. Remember to bring one for each student to ensure inclusivity. Friday is also library day. A friendly reminder to return all library books every Friday for exchange or renewal.

Have a wonderful week and happy learning,
Mme Garcin

Week of Feb 1st - 5th 2016

Bonjour familles de Division 6!

This week in French Language Arts, students are writing a story about an adventure in Canada's northern territories. This is integrating with our Social Studies unit of Canadian geography as we build our vocabulary and cultural knowledge of these places. We are building sentences and putting them together with characters, a place, a problem and a solution. In reading, students are doing guided reading groups and working on reading with fluency. We are also reading books together at the carpet with large font so that students can hear what fluency sounds like when reading punctuation (eg. voice lowers at periods and goes up at exclamation or question marks).

In English, grade 3's will continue their novel study of Stuart Little. In grammar, we are continuing our study of adjectives and finding them in our story. In Math, grade 2's are continuing to learn their addition and subtraction. In Grade 3, students are learning single-digit division.

In Social Studies this week, students are continuing to learn about our 3 territories, 10 provinces and 3 oceans. They are learning to read maps and find things according to north, south east and west. Our Quadra map is almost finished and it will be out on display in the hallway by the end of the week!

In Science, students are learning the different parts of a plant. New vocabulary includes: la tige (stem), la racine (root), la feuille (leaf), la fleur (flower). We will expand on this in the coming months as spring arrives by learning about photosynthesis, native plants and how to grow a plant from seed. On Wednesday we are meeting our kindergarten buddies to help them learn about the 5 senses. We will do a hands-on activity outside and perhaps continue on this topic next week.

In Art this week we will be writing loving messages and cards. February is heart month here at Quadra. Today hearts came home with a note for parents. Please write a kind act your child has done on this heart and sent it back to school. They will all be posted in the front hall this week for everyone to see! Thank you to our Random Acts of Kindness Team for organizing this.

In PE last week, students learned different ways of moving their bodies in a safe and coordinated way. This includes galloping, skipping and balancing as some key movement skills. They also learned to balance balls using different body parts and how to land a jump smoothly by landing softly on their toes and rolling back on their heels with bent knees.

Have a wonderful week everyone,

Mme Garcin
