Week of Jan 26th - 29th

lundi le 26 janvier, 2015

Chers parents de division 6,

This week in French Language Arts students are reviewing their regular and irregular verb endings. There will be a quiz on Thursday. We are also learning to conjugate our verbs more consistently into our paragraphs. We are now creating paragraphs with an introductory sentence, 3 interesting details (one per sentence), and a concluding sentence. We will apply this to both French and English writing exercises. We are also continuing to learn what a simple and compound sentence is in both English and French to help our writing sound more interesting.

In Math this week we are continuing to review multiplication and division, as well as read and solve word problems. We are also continuing with time and money. In Science this week are going to experiment building with different shapes to see which ones are the strongest (triangles, squares or arches)? Students are starting to collect recycled materials such as Kleenex boxes and toilet paper rolls for their final building project. More details to come!

Our field trip to the totem carving today was wonderful! Students asked many interesting questions such as: What kind of wood is best for totem carving? How old is the tree? What kind of paint are you using? How are you going to transport this totem? What do the animals represent?

Tomorrow we are celebrating the Québec Winter Carnival. Our French language monitor Mr. Gomez has organized all kinds exciting Carnival inspired games in the gym.  Vive l'hiver!

On Wednesday for Social Studies, students are asked to bring a family cultural artifact (such as a photo, clothing or artwork) from home and share some interesting details about it. For example, where it is from, how did you get it, why is it special?

NOTE: there is no school this Friday January 30th. We will therefore be going to the library on Thursday this week so please bring books for exchange on Thursday.

Tie dye shirts look great. Thank you to parents for your help in making this activity come true!

Have a wonderful week, Mme Garcin

Week of Jan 19th - 23th

lundi le 19 janvier, 2015

This week in French Language Arts students are learning the irregular verbs aller (to go) and faire (to do) in the present tense. We are learning to also identify them in the past tenses which are called passé compose and imparfait. These two verb tenses are described in detail in last week's post. Students are learning to apply these verbs in their writing, and identify the verb tenses with colour coded pens. We will also do a review of the regular present tense verbs we learned in term 1: -re, -ir and -er verbs, and the 4 irregular verbs we are learning now: être, avoir, aller et faire. Today, students sang and created songs in small groups to help them remember our two newest verbs: aller and faire.

In English this week we are reviewing possessive nouns and introducing homonyms. Students also practice their spelling words with mini-chalk boards. Next week we will begin learning sentence types such as a simple sentences (an independent clause) and a compound sentences (2 clauses, for example with and, so and for).

On Friday, there is also a school wide literacy event on Friday morning called "Reading Around Quadra". All teachers and staff will be reading a book in a different room throughout the school (even the janitor!) from 9:40-10:10am. Students will have a choice of where they would like to go!

In Math we are continuing to learn how to read a 24-hour clock with fun mini-clocks that students can experiment and quiz each other with. We are also continuing to review multiplication and division techniques. This week I will introduce addition and subtraction using the old stacking method (up and down). We will compare this older method to our new mental math strategies (left to right). This will lead into our money counting exercises.

In Science we are continuing our structures unit by building shapes using various materials such as straws and play dough. We will compare the shapes and stability of what we build. By the way, students are asked to start collecting recycling box materials for their final group project: building a solid tower. The largest recycled object allowed is one shoe box, and a bag full of materials labeled with the student's name.

In Social Studies this week, we have a local Indigenous storyteller, Leslie McGarry who will be coming to talk about local First Nations culture. She will also be guiding us through our BC museum field trip coming up on the morning of Thursday, February 12th.

In PE this week we will be playing hockey. On Friday for art we are making tie-dye shirts. Remember to bring a white cotton t-shirt in a zip lock bag before Thursday!

Have a wonderful week! Mme Garcin

Week of Jan 12th-16th

 mardi le 13 janvier, 2015

Dear Div 6 families,

In Language Arts this week, students are continuing to learn and apply irregular verbs être (to be) and avoir (to have) in the present tense. These 2 verbs are very important to know, not only in the present tense, but also because they make up the first part of the past tense "le passé composé", which I will explain below.

Students are also beginning to learn the two past tenses: "le passé composé" and "l'imparfait". Students are learning to identify them in a text, and in their journal writing, especially when they wrote about their holidays. Le "passé composé" is used when a precise action happened and was completed. For example: J'ai vu le film "Titanic" pendant mes vacances (I saw the movie "Titanic" during my holiday). Another example, Je suis allée à la piscine hier (I went to the pool yesterday). Both these actions are complete and have 2 parts (j'ai vu= I saw, je suis allée= I went). Part 1 (j'ai/je suis) is always the present tense of the auxiliary verb "être" or "avoir" and part 2 is the past participle of the main verb. On the other hand, "l'imparfait" is a past action that is incomplete, a description of something or a habitual event. For example: Je mangeais lorsque mon ami parlait (I was eating while my friend was talking). We will continue to learn and apply the present tense and these 2 past tenses in our French oral and written language.

In Math we are continuing to practice our multiplication and division skills up to 10, with the help of manipulatives such as tokens, cards and dice and worksheets. This week we are also decoding word problems and learning to show our work and answer the question using a full sentence. Students are continuing to learn how to read a 24h clock and count money. Together as a class we will problem solve (estimate and calculate) how much money we should have for the pool and how much we need. We will then count our pool money (loonies, quarters, dimes and nickels) together to make sure we have enough.

In Science, students have been working outdoors to identify natural and human-made structures, as well as label the various parts of a building (door, roof, window, etc). In Social Studies we are learning about early human settlement of North America and our cultural background using maps and atlases. We are learning the names of our 7 continents as we learn where all the various people came from who now call Canada their home. We have integrated art and structures by building small model First Nations canoes, which is how many people traveled long distances from one continent to another, even before sailing ships. We are also learning about the various First Nations cultures of North America, beginning with the Inuit from the north. Come and see our beautiful chalk art posted in the class!

This coming Friday we have a special rhythmic gymnastics activity in the morning, followed by our field trip to Crystal pool in the afternoon. Also very exciting, throughout the second term our weekly Friday morning library visit will be hosted by our school librarian Mr Mark Leischner.

Passez une très belle semaine! Mme Garcin

Week of Jan 5th - 9th

Chers famillies,

I hope you've all had some time to relax during the holiday! This week in French Language Arts, students are learning to identify and conjugate the irregular verb être (to be) and avoir (to have). We will use manipulatives and songs to help us learn and memorize these unique verbs.

Être                                      Avoir

Je suis                             J'ai
Tu es                               Tu as
Il/Elle/On est                  Il/Elle a
Nous sommes                 Nous avons
Vous êtes                         Vous avez
Ils/Elle sont                     Ils/Elles ont

Today we read the audio book Blanche Neige (Snow White) where we found many examples of irregular verbs in the present tense. We will also learn to conjugate these verbs in sentences and apply them to our writing exercises. Orally, students have shared what they did during the holiday and will be writing about their adventures in their journals. In English Language Arts, students are practicing their spelling. Later in the week, we will learn to find parts of speech within a text (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, etc).

In Math this week, students will continue learning division up to 10. We have also begun counting money and how to read a 24 hour clock during our morning calendar. In the coming weeks, we will also do some occasional review of addition, subtraction and multiplication using word problems.

In Science next week we will start our structure building unit. Students will learn to build solid structures using various kinds of materials and techniques. In Social Studies, we'll continue with our mapping unit by learning the continents and by exploring how Indigenous and Europeans first arrived to North America. In Physical Education (PE) we will continue floor hockey and other team building activities in the gym.

Pool permission forms have gone home today for our Friday, January 16th visit to Crystal Pool next week. If you can volunteer, please indicate on the form, thank you in advance! Also, scholastic forms have gone home. If you would like to place an order, please return by Friday, January 16th.

Have a wonderful week! Mme Garcin
