Week of Dec 14th -18th

Chers familles,

Our last week before the holiday's is an exciting one! Our activities are all about making connections. In the mornings we are doing French Language Arts during which we use our word wall of high fluency dictée words to write in our journals. Last week, grade 2's wrote a letter to Santa. All students have also written cards with thoughtful comments and drawings. In Oral Language we are practicing by discussing the different ways we celebrate holidays. We are also reading daily in small groups while talking about our reading strategies and looking for high fluency words. Students have completed their phonics booklets and are asked to apply their letter-sound combinations to all their reading activities. Grade 2 students are continuing phonics with Madame Rolston once a week.

In grade 3 English Language Arts this week we are reviewing possessive nouns we learned about last week. Then we are going to discuss and find examples of homonyms (2 words that are pronounced the same, but their meanings and spelling are different). For example, two, to and too. This week, we will also continue our novel study of Stuart Little, by EB White. Each student has their own copy of this chapter book while Madame is modeling to read with expression by using the punctuation, picture clues and other reading aloud strategies before and during reading. After reading, students do a visualizing activity to help express their comprehension of the text. At the end of the week, students are asked to bring their term 1 English phonics activity booklet. If it is not finished, students are asked to complete and return it during after the holidays.

In Math, grade 2's are doing addition word problems. Grade 3's will continue to explore multiplication up to 10. So far students have learned strategies for multiplying by 0, 1, 2, 4, 9 and 10. This week we will look at the patterns when multiplying by 5 and continue to explore the multiplication table. A copy will be coming home shortly and students are encouraged to begin memorizing this table.

In the afternoons, students are busy practicing, performing and watching our Primary and Intermediate Holiday Concerts. Please come and join us on Wednesday from 1-2pm in the Quadra gym for our performance in the Primary Concert. On Tuesday, students are asked to wear any combination of red, white, green and black. Some of our grade 3 choir students will also be performing on Thursday from 1-2pm during the Intermediate Concert.

Friday is pajama day! We will have a fun-filled day with pancakes in the morning followed by a movie and popcorn In the afternoon we will do some basketball in the gym and have an afternoon of open choice arts and crafts.

See you back at school on Monday January 4th. Have a wonderful and restful holiday!

Mme Garcin

Week of Dec 7th - 11th

lundi le 7 décembre, 2015

Chers famillies,

Welcome to another exciting week with Division 6! We are learning many new things as our 2nd term begins. In French Language Arts, we are learning and practicing to conjugate the verbs avoir, être and all regular verbs ending in -er in the present tense. Students are learning to isolate the root of the verb (le radical) and add the proper ending, depending on the subject pronoun or noun. We are finding them in the stories we read and writing them in our journals. Today, students read to their little buddies. Tomorrow, students will participate in their weekly guided reading groups and continue to practice oral pronunciation, reading strategies and answer comprehension questions.

In grade 3 English Language Arts, we are continuing to learn about nouns. This week we are learning how to write and pronounce plural nous. We will also be starting a novel study of Stuart Little by EB White. Together will learn to read and understand this small chapter book with a variety of learning activities and of course, the movie at the end.

In grade 3 Math, students are continuing to learn about basic multiplication. This week students are learning the rules for multiplying by 0 (the answer is always 0), and multiplying by 1 (the answers is always the other factor). In grade 2 Math, students are skip counting, learning about symmetry and creating graphs.

In Science this week, students will learn the different parts of their eyes and explore their reflection in the mirror. They will predict and observe how their eyes change in the light versus the dark. In Social Studies, we are doing a short unit called Festival of Lights. Students will learn about different cultures and how they celebrate various holidays with light (for example, Hanukkah, Diwali, Kwanzaa, Chrsitams and Santa Lucia). As we get ready for our holidays in 2 weeks, all students will share how they celebrate their favourite holidays during our carpet discussions and in their journals.

In Visual Arts, parent and teacher in training Morgan Holmes (Keels' dad) and a few of his classmates, will come do an art project with us on Friday. Students will learn to make ropes using the a Wet Felting technique. In PE this week, we have our last swim lesson on Thursday. We have also been doing some outdoor circuit jogging and indoor team building with bench ball. This week we will start a basketball unit.

On Thursday we are participating in our annual school-wide Loonie Emporium. Students are asked to bring a strong and large shopping bag, their envelope with $4 and the 4 names of family members they will be purchasing gifts for (not including themselves). We will be going as a class from 9:50am-10:20am. If students wish to purchase an item for themselves or more for others, parents can accompany them after school. If you have any donations of lightly used items you can drop them off at the entrance of the school this week.

Many thanks for all your support at home and have a wonderful week!

Mme Garcin

Monday 30 November 2015

Week of Nov 30th - Dec 4th, 2015

lundi le 30 november, 2015

This week in French Language Arts, students are now learning how to conjugate regular verbs in the present tense. We have started with verbs ending in -er (for example aimer et jouer). Next will be -ir verbs (for example finir, courir, choisir), followed by -re verbs (for example, rire, vendre, prendre). Students will learn to apply these verb endings depending on the subject of the sentence. Practice will take place in their journals, when writing stories and in January when we will begin writing letters to pen pals at  École Doncaster School. Students are continuing to read often, sometimes up to 3 times per day. Today they read to their little buddies and all participated in small guided reading groups. In guided reading we focused on using picture clues to de-code unknown words. We are also looking for verb conjugations and their endings. Students are encouraged to do the same with their at-home reading selections.

In grade 3 English Language Arts, students are learning about common and proper nouns. Next will be plural nouns. In grade 2 Math, students are continuing the same concepts as last week and also learning to count money. In grade 3 Math, students are beginning to learn the concept of multiplication as repeated addition (the relationship between 2+ 2+ 2= 6,  3+ 3= 6,  2 × 3 = 6, 3 ×2 = 6). They are also writing equations based on pictures, for example 3 groups of two equals 3 × 2 = 6.

In Science this week, students are predicting and examining the difference in texture, taste, colour and smell of raw and cooked carrots. By using their 5 senses, students will record their observations. In PE this week, students are walking and swimming. We will also continue to build on our ball handling skills by learning to use a basketball and learning to play team sports. In Visual Art last week we made beautiful snowflakes, which are now posted in the windows. On Friday, we will be making Angels with craft materials provide by the grassroots organization; African Aids Angels. Students will learn about the lives of children living in orphanages, and how the money they are donating will help to buy food, clothing and school supplies. Each student will dedicate their Angel to an African child and will keep it as a reminder of their generous support.
Have a wonderful week,

Week of Nov 24th - 28th

mardi le 25 novembre 2015

Chers familles de Division 6,

Last week, students worked hard with Mme Derman and Mme Rolston. Students continued to build their readings skills through phonics and comprehension skills through games. They also continued to develop their writing skills in their journals by using the common sight words on our word wall. In Math last week, grade 2 students worked on estimating, symbols, reading and writing numbers, as well as mental math games. In grade 3, students have started to learn how to graph using an x and y axis. In Science, students did sink vs float experiments. In PE, students practiced their ball handling skills by playing dodge ball. In Art, students did a directed cartoon drawing activity around emotions. They also did a hidden number picture, which is posted on our bulletin board. Students created a beautiful mural drawing as a welcome home gift. Many thoughtful messages were included, thank you to all the students for this beautiful gift. Also, thank you to Mme Derman for organizing such a fun filled week of meaningful learning!

This week we are continuing our French Oral Language development though coral reading and guided reading groups. In our guided reading groups today, we practiced our fluency with punctuation. We talked about and practiced what our voices sound like when we come to the end of a sentence with a period, exclamation and question mark. Our guided reading groups will continue to tie in with our French Language learning by finding the conjugated verbs "être" and "avoir". We are continuing to learn how to integrate these verbs correctly into our writing. Later this week we will start learning about regular verbs that end in -er, for example "aimer" and "marcher" and how to conjugate them in the present tense with all the pronouns (Je, Tu, etc). The endings of these regular verbs are all the same (there are some exceptions of course, but we will learn the regular ones). Remember, that when reading a plural verb ending in -ent (for example "Ils aiment"- they love), the final -nt is silent.

Here is an example or a regular verb ending in -er:

aimer (to love)- present tense

J'aim e
Tu aim es
Il/Elle aim e
Nous aim ons
Vous aim ez
Ils/Elles aim ent

In Math this week, students are continuing with what they were doing last week. In grade 2: estimating, symbols, reading and writing numbers, mental math games. In grade 3: graphing, word problems with equations and a review of place value. In Science today, students did finger printing. They predicted whether or not their two thumbs and if the thumbs of others would be the same or different. We concluded that each finger has a unique pattern! In English, grade 3's will begin a grammar booklet. They will start by learning the difference between common and proper nouns. In PE this week we are going to our weekly pool lesson and we will play a variation of ball handling games such as dodge ball. On Friday we will have a unity circle to talk about virtues we like sharing with others and reviewing our new Quadra School expectation that we call "Respect Around Quadra".

Please note, report cards will be coming home on Friday. Please sign the envelope and return it empty. Many thanks!

Mme Garcin

Week of Nov 9th - 13th

lundi le 9 novembre, 2015

Chers familles de Division 6,

This is an exciting week with our Remembrance Day assembly on Tuesday at 10:30 am and our second swimming lesson on Thursday afternoon. Please note there is no school this Wednesday November 11th.

In French Language Arts, students are continuing to learn the concept of verb conjugation, beginning with the irregular verb "avoir" (to have) in the present tense. Next, we will learn "être" (to be). We will practice writing these verbs in our journals and memorizing them through song. Students are continuing to read with me one-on-one to assess their instructional level. They are also learning to apply reading strategies such as picture clues, re-reading and carefully sounding out words.

In English, grade 3's are learning about parts of speech and how to build a sentence. Subjects, verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, conjunctions (joiner words) and homonyms are some of the terms we have started to learn.

In Math, grade 2's are continuing to skip count, build numbers with base ten blocks, write and read numbers to 100, learn greater than and less than, estimate quantities to 100, recognize coins. They will also continue to review patterning and addition/subtraction up to 18. Last week, grade 3's did not get a chance to be introduced to graphing, therefore it will be happening this week. In preparation for the end of the term, for the next two weeks, grade 3's are reviewing what they have learned so far this term. This includes skip counting up to 1000, greater/less than symbols, place value, patterns and addition/subtraction of numbers up to 1000. Please review these at home as much as possible.

In Science, we are continuing our study of solids, liquids and gases. This week we will predict, observe and record what happens to cereal when exposed to water (expansion). In Social Studies, although our Environment unit is complete, we are finally getting worms for our worm bin. These elusive critters have been located, hatched and will arrive this week! We can now feed them with some of our food scraps and watch them turn our garbage into soil.  Our goal is to harvest some of this soil in the spring for our plants.

In PE, we are running and walking regularly. This Thursday we have our swimming lessons, so remember to pack swimming gear on Wednesday evening! Mme Derman will be in on Friday to replace me. Students will continue with their regular routines and learning activities while I am gone.

Have a wonderful week!

Mme Garcin

Week of Nov 2nd - 6th

lundi le 2 novembre, 2015

Dear Div 6 families,

Students have an exciting week of learning ahead. In Language Arts we are continuing with our French phonics program, story writing and reading on a daily basis. For the next couple weeks, students are reading one-on-one with me to assess their reading level for term 1 report cards. New this week will be the introduction of verb conjugation. We will start with the irregular verb "avoir" (to have) in the present tense. We will learn it through song, visual and oral activities. By the way, the reason we don't say "Je ai" is because in French we drop the e when the following word starts with a vowel.

J'ai (I have)
Tu as (You have- singular)
Il/Elle a (He/She has)
Nous avons (We have)
Vous avez (You have- plural)
Ils/Elles ont (They have)

In Math, grade 2's are continuing to skip count up and down by 2s, 5s, 10s, and 25s. In the following weeks, they will be building numbers with base ten blocks, writing and reading numbers to 100, learning greater than and less than, estimating quantities to 100, recognizing coins and using coins to skip count.  They will also continue to review patterning, and work intermittently on speed and accuracy with addition/subtraction.  Gr 2s need to be able to add and subtract with ease and speed to 18, and have strategies to add and subtract to 100. Please consider practicing any and all of these skills at home as well:)

In grade 3 Math, students are continuing to practice addition and subtraction of large numbers up to 1000. They are learning and sharing many of their strategies, such as mental math, borrowing, making groups of 10 and rounding. New this week will be an introduction to graphing using candy and other topics of interest.

In English, grade 3's are practicing their spelling and learning how to make sentences with these words. They are encouraged to practice these words daily at home. If you have internet access, spelling words are posted at spellingcity.com/egarcin/. This is a fun way to do homework!

In Science, we are wrapping up our Environment Unit and starting our study of solids, liquids and gases. Starting with solids, students are making predictions about water volume changes when transforming water into ice (will it expand or contract?). As a fun extension activity today, students were given ice cubes with their little buddies to see how long they could prevent them from melting. There were some great ideas, such as shade, covering up it up with leaves and avoiding skin contact. We will continue to do some fun hands-on science experiments such as sinking vs floating and colour mixing.

On Friday, in preparation for Remembrance Day on November 11th, our weekly art activity will be poppy printing and painting. By the way, parents are invited to join us for our annual Remembrance Day Assembly in the morning of Tuesday, November 10th. Please note that Wednesday November 11th is a statutory holiday and there will be no school.

Last week we missed our gym block to do pumpkin carving! This week we will continue to learn and practice different ball handling and movement techniques in the gym. We will continue doing our regular jogs around the school. Starting this Thursday afternoon, we have a weekly neighborhood walk to the pool and swimming lessons. Please help your child pack their swim suit, towel, hair brush and hair tie on Wednesday evenings.

Have a fabulous week!

Mme Garcin

Sunday 1 November 2015

New dicée routine

Dear families,

I have decided to do dictée once every two weeks, alternating with the grade 3  English spelling. They will still be on Thursdays. This will allow more learning time in the classroom for other activities, give students more time to learn the words and grade 3's will only have one test to study for each week. Therefore, this coming Thursday is the Grade 3 English spelling. The following week there will be a dictée for grade 2's and 3's. If you have any questions or comments feels free to email or call.

Mme Garcin

Monday 26 October 2015

Week of Oct 26th - 30th

Dear families,

In Language Arts students are continuing to read in French on a daily basis by learning phonetic sound combinations and sounding them out together as a class. In Writing, students are using new vocabulary (about fall and Halloween), using joiner words and building sentences to write stories about their autumn adventures. In Reading, students will also be taking turns to read individually with their teacher, in small guided reading groups and independently throughout the week. Practice makes perfect!

In Math, grade 2's are starting to learn number concepts and place value such as ones, tens and hundreds. Grade 3's are continuing to learn addition of large numbers up to 1000. New this week is subtraction of large numbers using the borrowing method. I will be asking students to bring some of their Halloween candy to school on Monday next week. We will use them to learn how to sort and graph.

In Social Studies this week, we are continuing our Environment Unit by becoming Climate Superhero's! Students will be coming home with a checklist to help reduce our carbon footprint at home. These will be due back at the end of November to follow up on how we are able to make sustainable lifestyle choices. This is also our week to be "garbage gobblers", which means it is our job to do our part in keeping the school grounds clean, by safely picking up garbage using buckets and claws. Bravo students!

In Science this week we are starting our solids, liquids and gases unit. We are beginning with solids by finding ways to sort them in a scientific way (for example by colour, shape or purpose).

On Wednesday we have special guest Constable Craig Barker, our new Quadra School liaison officer. He is coming to do a Halloween safety presentation. In the afternoon we have our 3rd and last visit with Leslie McGarry from the Native Friendship Centre. She will be teaching students more about local First Nations culture with a craft activity. On Thursday afternoon, we are excited for a special Story Theatre performance in the gym.

By the way, Salmon are now spawning at Goldstream Park. If you have a chance to go after school or on the weekend, I highly recommend it ;)

Happy Halloween! Mme Garcin

Week of Oct 19th - 22nd

Dear families,

This is a short week because of parent/teacher meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons (school is dismissed at 11:50am on these days), and a Pro-D day on Friday (no school). Students are continuing to learn French phonics in the mornings and making connection during our silent reading and small group readings sessions in the afternoon. Today, students did an excellent job of reading to their kindergarten buddies!

Students are also developing their writing skills by learning to build a sentence with a subject, verb, noun and adjective. We will build on these skills in the following weeks, by learning to recognize and apply singular and plurals endings, as well as masculine and feminine words.

In Math, all students are reviewing basic number concepts they have been learning since the beginning of the year. For example, patterns, place value, reading large numbers and basic addition and subtraction.

Grade 3's have an English spelling test this week. We are also continuing to learn how to read by looking at long and short vowels sounds, and how to sound them out. Grade 3's have also been learning to read large numbers and place value vocabulary in English up to one hundred thousand! For example, how do we say 437,213 and how many thousands are there? Seven!

I encourage everyone to practice the dictée and/or spelling and read in French for 15-20 minutes each night. These routines builds good study habits and helps solidify concepts learned in class.

Have a wonderful week, Mme Garcin

Week of Oct 13th- 16th

Chers familles de Division 6,

Our week today began with an exciting field trip to the museum. Students will be writing about what they saw in their journals. They will learn to use and apply joiner words in their writing, such as 'en premier' (first), 'ensuite' (then), 'et' (and), and finalement (finally). We are also continuing to develop our reading skills through phonics and small group reading.

In Math this week, we are continuing to learn and practice place value, how to read large numbers and how to count by 2's, 5's and 10's and 25's, forwards and backwards. We will also be playing card games to help solidify addition and subtraction skills up to 10.

In English, Grade 3's are learning to read and identify short and long vowel sounds. To complement our study of the Environment, the Sierra Club is coming to do an outdoor presentation on Wednesday afternoon to talk about our local environment. In Visual Arts, last week students learned to mix and create all the colours of the rainbow using only the three primary ones: red, yellow and blue. This week, students will apply what they have learned and be given a blank canvas, free to create what they wish. In Gym last week, we practiced different types of ball passes we would use in basketball and soccer. For example, a straight chest pass and the bounce pass. We focused on body positioning, eye contact and control. We will continue to practice these skills on Friday.

Please note in your calendars next week that school will be dismissed at 11:50am on Tues, Oct 20th and Wed, Oct 21 for Parent & Teacher Interviews. The purple forms with your preferred times were sent home last week and were due back today. I will be sending home your confirmed scheduled time in agendas by this Friday, Oct 16th. If you would like to meet with me, please return this form as soon as possible, or contact me at the school by phone or email. I look forward to meeting most of you next week!

Monday 5 October 2015

Week of Oct 5th- 9th, 2015

Chers famillies de Division 6,

This week, students are continuing their learning in many different subject areas. In Oral Language, they are learning and reviewing how to read and pronounce key French letter combinations such as é, è, in, on, ch and s pronounced at z. Students are applying these sounds during guided reading sessions about 2-3 times per week. I challenge students with more difficult books (at their "instructional level" ) and provide them before, during and after reading strategies to help them understand what they are reading.

Students have been busy writing and illustrating a short story entitled "Mes vacances d'été" (my summer holidays). We are using these sentences, as well as the dictée sentence, to learn how to identify parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns.

In Math, Grade 2's with Mme Rolston are continuing to learn their number sense. On Tuesday, they will be graphing the question:  What is your family eating for Thanksgiving? Mme Rolston has requested that you please discuss your food traditions with your children.  If you don't celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving, that will be a category of the graph too and students can report they will be eating "a regular supper".  In Grade 3, with the help of manipulates, student are learning about place value up to a thousand, and learning to read large numbers in French and English. I encourage you to practice this at home. For example, how do we say 5, 302? Or you can challenge them to even larger numbers! We are also learning to break down a number. For example, 432= 400+30+2. And finally, we are continuing to practice applying the greater than, less than and equal to symbols.

In Social Studies tomorrow we have a special guest from the Native Friendship Center, Leslie McGarry. She will be visiting us and sharing local knowledge of her culture through storytelling. She will also be guiding us in the museum for our first field trip on Tuesday, October 13th. Today I sent and email about the details of this trip. If you did not receive this email, please contact me at egarcin at sd61.bc.ca and I can add you to our parent/guardian contact list.

As part of our environmental studies and in combination with art, students made bird feeders with recycled milk jugs. These will be coming home this week. Please make sure they are hung outside, sheltered away from the rain to avoid the seeds from getting wet. The contents are a wild bird seed mix, which can be purchased in pet stores and most grocery stores.

In PE, students have been learning to do endurance running. Conserving energy and maintaining a steady pace are key to a strong and healthy heart!

Please note there will be no school on Monday, October 12th. See you on Tuesday October 13th for our field trip to the museum. By the way, I am looking for 4 adult volunteers. Please contact me if you can join us for the day, many thanks!

Have a wonderful week everyone and Happy Thanksgiving!

Mme Garcin

Week of Sept 28th - Oct 2nd, 2015

lundi le 28 septembre, 2015

Chers familles,

Bienvenue! This is going to be an exciting week because we are starting some engaging units and getting used to our many routines.

This week in French Language Arts, we do daily French phonics in the morning to help us learn and practice our French Oral language and word pronunciation. Today, students put some of these skills into practice by reading a short story to their new little kindergarten buddies. They also worked in pairs to learn how to find words and their definitions in a dictionary, one of many references materials students will learn to use this year. Students will also be practicing their dictée at least once per week in-class, whenever possible. The weekly dictée is on Thursday, and can be viewed on the previous blog post.

While Grade 2's do additional French Language activities with Mme Rolston on Wednesdays, Grade 3 students have started their English program with me. Together we are learning English phonics, starting with long and short vowel sounds. We will learn to read and write English through a wide variety of activities. Student's are encouraged to practice their spelling words at home with Spelling City (see direct link on previous blog post), and read as often as possible!

After Language Arts in the morning, we have Math after recess. In Math this week, Grade 2 students (with Mme Rolston) are practicing their number sense by counting by 2's, 5's and 10's up to 100, both forwards and backwards. This is an important skill to apply when learning to add and subtract larger numbers. Grade 3's this week are learning to write and identify numbers up to 1000. Today, they were introduced to the 3 symbols- greater than, less than and equal to. Students will practice these new concepts until they are ready to move onto place values up to 1000. Before the end of the week, we will be counting our Jelly Bean jar! This is great way to practice our estimation skills, and to count large numbers (in groups of 5 and 10).

In Social Studies, our first unit is about the Environment. We are thinking up of different ways we can help the environment. For example, we are getting into the routine of reducing our waste, re-using classroom materials, using less water, turning lights off and recycling our lunch containers. We will soon be composting our own food waste and hopefully creating a cell phone recycling station for the school and the community!

We will start our first Science unit in a few weeks. We will learn to ask questions and make predictions while studying solids, liquids and gases through a variety of hands-on experiments.

Here is a snapshot of some of our routines:

Library- For term 1, Wednesday mornings. Please return library books on Tuesday so that our librarian can scan them back in before our weekly Wednesday visit.

Music- Monday first block (students get picked up by the music teacher and go straight to the music room). Please go straight there if you check into the office late on a Monday morning. Our other music blocks are on Tuesdays and Thursdays just before lunch.

Gym- Friday after lunch. Please ensure your child has a pair of running shoes that stays at school.

Students went home today with a classroom newsletter outlining these routines and other important classroom information. I also sent home a parent volunteer form, request for student background information and a booklet of common French sight words.

I am working on getting a parent contact list and I will email it out as soon as I've heard back from everyone. I need to make sure everyone is comfortable sharing their contact information.

Last week, a home reading and dictée routine letter were also sent home. If you have any questions, feel free to email or call me at the school.

That's all for Division 6 news this week. Make sure to check the Quadra School calendar for important school-wide activities that I will not be posting here on this blog. For example, Photo Day will be this Friday, October 2nd.

Have a wonderful week everyone, Mme Garcin

Dictée #1: Thursday, Sept 17th

Dear Div 6 families,

Below is our first dictée and it will be on Thursday, September 17th. It has been shortened for the first week because there are fewer days to prepare. Grade 2's and 3's will have a weekly dictée. Grade 3's will have and extended dictée with sentences and a spelling test every second Thursday or Friday (I will confirm this bi-weekly routine once our schedule is finalized). The dictée and spelling lists will be sent home in agendas and posted here on Fridays. In the event that there is no school on a Monday, the dictée might be given on the following Friday. If there is no school on a Friday, grade 3 spelling will be the following Thursday. This allows for a full week to prepare. Therefore, Wednesday evening is the last evening to study for our weekly dictée and every second Wednesday or Thursday is the last evening for grade 3's to study their spelling words. If you have any questions to help clarify these routines feel free to email me at egarcin@sd61.bc.ca.

lundi le 14 septembre, 2015

Dear Division 6 families,

I am very pleased to announce we will be a grade 2/3 class, so far with 23 students. Last week, students got to know me as I showed them a suitcase of souvenirs since my childhood began in Ottawa many years ago. Afterwards we reviewed classroom rules and vocabulary. Students also taught me their names, interests and hobbies. I invite you to read the "About Me" section on the right hand column and I look forward to getting to know all of you in the coming months.

Students took home their new agendas on Friday. Please help ensure this agenda stays in the backpack. Please make sure to check the front pouch of the agendas daily for important handouts and information. Some of this information, such as weekly dictée and grade 3 spelling, will also be posted here. If you would like to communicate with me, please do not use the agenda, rather email (egarcin@sd61.bc.ca) and phone (Quadra School: 250-382-8296) is best. This is because, sometimes students will only be opening agendas at the end of the day to write their homework. I check my email in the morning and after school, and will reply to you as soon as I can.

I would love to have all your contact information so that I can send groups emails. If you do not have or use email, please phone me at Quadra School and we can find an alternate way to communicate.

I will send more detailed classroom information and procedures throughout the next few days and weeks such as our dictée, at-home reading program and parent volunteering opportunities. For students to stay up-to-date and be successful, I encourage a regular routine after school that includes reading the agenda, at-home reading and studying for grade 3 spelling before or after diner -as much as possible. On the right hand column, there is also a link to some fun online French Language games.

Next time you are at Quadra please come and introduce yourself. We are located in room 100. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to come see me in person, contact me by phone at Quadra school (after school is best), or by email at egarcin@sd61.bc.ca to make an appointment for longer visits. I look forward to meeting you at our Meet the Teacher event on Thursday, Sept 24th from 6-7pm.

Sincerely,

Madame Elise Garcin (formerly Hoefer)

Week of May 25th - 29th

Chers familles de Division 6,

In preparation for the end of term 3, students are working hard by learning some new concepts, doing review and getting ready for some assessments in French, English and Math. In French this week, students are writing a short story entitled "Une aventure avec mon animal" (An adventure with my animal). Afterwards if time permits this week, students will begin writing their last pen pal letter of the year (otherwise we will do this next week). We are continuing to practice applying the imperfect and passé composé verb tenses in our writing. Practice, practice, practice! This week, students will also be applying their reading and reading comprehension strategies by reading a story and answering questions.

In English, students are continuing to learn how to identify, sound out and apply short vowel sounds to their writing. Students will also be applying their reading and reading comprehension skills to text and answering questions. This will help assess their approximate end of grade 3 English reading level.

In Math, review is continuing in 2-D and 3-D geometric shapes, fractions, measurement and arithmetic. In preparation for our end-of-term test, booklets will be coming home for completion. Please correct anything circled in red and return to school. Also, we will soon be measuring our heights to see how many centimeters we have grown in grade 3!

In Science and in the computer lab, students are continuing to work on their PowerPoint projects. In Social Studies we are continuing to learn about our provinces and their unique features. In Gym, we are polishing up our dance, playing games with Mr James' grade 3 class and keeping our bodies healthy with regular jogs around the school. This exercise helps us focus when working hard in the classroom.

And finally, on Friday May 26th, we are looking forward to part 2 of 2 visits from local artist Renee Sala. She will be helping us finish our school-wide Friendship Flat Art project. These beautiful flags will be used to decorate Quadra throughout our 100th birthday celebrations.

Week of May 20th - 22st

mercredi le 20 mai, 2015

Chers familles,

This is a mini 3-day week packed with many activities. In Language Arts today we looked at l'imparfait (the imperfect past tense) and how to identify this verb tense in text. We also are working on finding the root of this conjugated verb in order to find the unconjugated version of the verb (in French this is called the infinitive). For example, je marchais (in the imperfect past tense) is the verb marcher (this is the infinitive). We will continue to work on this past tense. We are applying this tense in our writing exercises, such as our pen pals letters we will be writing later this week or next week.

In English Language Arts students are learning to identify phonetic sounds, beginning with the short vowels sounds of a, e, i, o, u. Students are writing short stories using these phonetic sounds. In conjunction with our computer lab time and science, students are also working on an Animal PowerPoint project.

In Math, students are now reviewing term 3 topics. Today we reviewed 2-D geometric shape names and how to sort them in various ways, such as by number of sides. We will also continue to review 3-D shapes, graphs, fractions and basic arithmetic until the end of the year.

In Social Studies this week, students are learning about each Canadian province, along with their capitol cities, flags, flowers, birds and coat of arms. In PE, students are polishing up their merengue dance, which we will be performing at our Friday, June 5th assembly, beginning at 9am. Come and watch us in the gym!

Have a wonderful week, Mme Garcin

Week of May 11th - 15th

Chers familles,

In French Language Arts this week, students are learning about the future tense - future simple. We are comparing the similarities and differences of this tense with the present, passé composé and imparfait. We are starting with regular -er verbs such as manger (to eat). Students will also be writing in their journals, reading in small groups and reading individually with me throughout the week.

English Language Arts and Science will be integrated into an animal PowerPoint project that students are beginning tomorrow. Students will be developing their reading, scanning, summarizing, writing, research and presentations skills, while learning about their animals and its habitat.

In Math this week, students are reviewing their basic multiplication table (up to 10) and will be given a short fill-in-the blank quiz on Friday. About half the table will be left for them to fill in. I encourage them to familiarize and memorize as much as they can. This will help them as we start to do 2 and 3 digit multiplication. Students will also get an introduction to fractions this week. For example, they will learn to represent basic fractions such as 1/2 and 3/4 with pictures and the vocabulary for the nominator and denominator.

In Social Studies, students will resume their study of Canadian natural and political geography this week. In PE, we are doing a short gymnastics unit while we continue to polish our dance routine. We will soon set a date for our performance! We will also be doing soccer outside until the end of June.

Note that this Wednesday evening, May 13th from 7-9pm, you are invited to come see their finished bilingual books in the gym. On Friday, we are looking forward to part 1 of 2 visits from local artist Renee Sala. She will be guiding us through our school-wide Friendship Flat Art project, which is another exciting activity celebrating Quadra's 100th birthday.

Week of May 4th - 8th

lundi le 4 mai, 2015

In Language Arts, students are working hard this week on writing and illustrating their bilingual book entitled "If I were 100". This is a great way to learn the various steps involved in writing, from note taking, to draft and a final copy. We are also applying all the knowledge we are building around topics such as sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and verb conjugations. Our book show will be on May 13th, more details to come!

In Math, students are doing "math minutes" this week, which are designed to help solidify basic math skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You may see your child coming home with some practice ones. Today, students did an addition and subtraction one. All students took home a multiplication one today, which is due back tomorrow (only takes about 1 minute). We are also continuing our geometry unit by looking at axis of symmetry and the description and identification of various 2-D and 3-D shapes.

In Science, students are now finishing up with plant studies and moving onto animals and their habitats. Each student has chosen an animal to study. They will be researching and creating a PowerPoint presentation about their animal's habitat and physical appearance. We will continue our Canadian geography unit next week, once we finish our books.

Tomorrow we have a special performance by Axe Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art. This will lead nicely into some gymnastics we'll be doing in PE. In Art, Mrs Bourque will be coming in to do some more Indigenous crafts, and we are also integrating art into our books.

Have a wonderful week everyone! Mme Garcin

Week of April 27th - May 1st

lundi le 27 avril, 2015

We have some exciting activities this week. Today, students walked to the Wellesley Retirement Home to interview local residents. This interview is helping students gather ideas for the bilingual book they are writing this week, and next, entitled "If I were 100". We also formally invited our new friends to Quadra's 100 year anniversary on Saturday June 6th. Thanks to this book, students are also being introduced to the future tense and will be writing their stories in the past conditional (le passé conditionnel). In French and English reading, students are also working hard at practicing their reading strategies individually and in small groups.

In Math this week, we are continuing to practice calculating the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. In Geometry, we are also learning to identify the axis of symmetry on shapes, letters and pictures. We will use a mirror (also known as a mira in French) to explore this concept.

In Science today students have planted their sprouted seeds. We will now keep a close eye on them and hope they grow big enough to plant outside. Once they are big and strong enough, they will be coming home for the garden! On Wednesday, we have a special presentation from the Northwest Wildlife Preservation Society about Owls, and other birds of Prey also know as Raptors. We will learn how certain animals live and survive in their natural habitats.

In Social studies, students will continue to learn about Canadian geography. In PE, we are continuing to practice our merengue dance. In Art on Friday, we will be creating our book covers, using arts & crafts by illustrating them with a self-portrait of ourselves as an elderly person. To celebrate our learning in music, on Thursday from 1:00-2:00pm, there will be an intermediate concert with ukulelee and choir club students performing in the gym. Come and join us!

Week of Apr 20th - 24th

lundi le 20 avril, 2015

Students this week are continuing to learn and apply the past verb tenses: passé composé and imparfait. We will do a variety of oral and written activities to help us make sense of these past verb tenses. We will also be doing some small group reading and comprehension exercises, as well as read our Doncaster pen pal letters that will arrive tomorrow!

In English, students will finish presenting their Powerpoint paragraphs and sentences. We are explicitly working on, oral speaking skills (voice volume, tone, speed and body language), as well as our sentence and paragraph structure (such as parts of speech, commas, punctuation, meaning and structure).

In Math this week, students are continuing to learn how to calculate the perimeter of a regular and irregular shape. We are also learning the various names and parts of 2D and 3D shapes, such as edges (les côtés) and vertices (les sômmets) and faces (les faces). With this vocabulary, we are learning to describe and sort geometric shapes. Today, students were challenged to learn the order of operations, which you may know as BEDMAS (brackets, exponents, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction). Although they have not yet learned about exponents (because BEDMAS is usually taught in later grades), some students are beginning to do worksheets with +/-, and +/x, for example: (210-190)-(203-110).

In Science this week, our seeds have started to germinate and we are recording the process in great detail! Once we have 22 that have sprouted, we will plant them into small containers. We are learning a lot of vocabulary, such as the primary and secondary roots (la racine principale et secondaire), the stem (la tige), the leaves (les feuilles), the bud (le bourgeon). When recording our observations in French, we are also working on sentence structure, grammar and punctuation.

In Social Studies, students are learning Canadian geography. This includes, lakes, rivers, mountains, provinces, territories and their capitals. Students need to start thinking about which province they would like to do a tri-fold bulleting project about. Details of this project will be going home soon.

In Art, students will soon start to make and create a small, bilingual book, which will be called "If I were 100" (Si j'avais cent ans). In PE, we are continuing to practice our dance routine in the gym and sometimes outside! We also share a PE block with Mr James' English grade 3 class. We have been playing bench ball and dodge ball. These games help us to not only stay active, but also to learn how to play as a team and apply game strategies.

Note that on Wednesday, students are dismissed at 11:50am. Student - led conferences will be taking place in the classroom from 1:00pm-6:00pm. Please arrive and leave at your 30 minute scheduled time. You and your child will have a checklist of activities to do together upon arrival. Your child will be prepared to show you his/her learning.

Bonne semaine ! Mme Garcin

Week of April 13th - 17th

lundi le 13 avril, 2015

Bonjour!

This week we are continuing many of the same topics as last week. In French Language Arts, students are continuing to learn the past tenses: le passé compose and l'imparfait. We are also continuing to work on our reading strategies in French and English that build pronunciation, comprehension and the joy in reading.

In English, students are reviewing parts of speech we have been learning about since November, such as verbs, nouns (proper vs common), adjectives, adverbs and pronouns. Students are finishing their PowerPoint paragraphs about themselves and presenting their sentences and paragraphs to the class, using our projector and screen.

In Math, we are using money to learn how to calculate change, learning to measure perimeter and starting to build our geometric shape vocabulary (such as octagon, parallelogram and sphere). We are also continuing to learn and practice adding and subtracting numbers up to 1000.

In Science we are watching our seeds germinate and recording our observations. Our radish seeds have already started to spout! Students are also integrating art and science by using pastels to draw local native wildflowers. On Wednesday afternoon we are walking up to Summit park. We will be on a mission to find as many native wildflowers as possible. Students can also draw if they are feeling inspired!

In Social Studies this week, we are learning about some of Canada's geographic features, such as mountain ranges and lakes. Mrs Bourque, our Aboriginal Assistant is also coming on Friday to make talking sticks and teach us the importance of listening and sharing our thoughts with others in a kind and caring way.

In Friday, we also have a special guest, chef Jeff Kelland (Gwen's dad). We will talk about healthy eating and he will show us how to make our own tortillas from scratch, yummy.

Have a wonderful week, Mme Garcin

Week of April 7th - 10th

mardi le 7 avril, 2015

Chers familles,

In Language Arts this week students are continuing to learn the past tense: le passé compose (a past action that has been completed). This week students will be introduced to l'imparfait (a past action happening during another action, a past action that takes a lot of time, a past action that is repeated, or a description of a past event). Students will learn when to use the appropriate past tense by identfiying them in text, creating examples and through oral and written practice. Students also continue to play fun language games with Mr Gomez. Today, students were challenged to translate common English and French phrases that cannot be literally translated. For example, I am finished = J'ai fini, NOT Je suis fini. Mr Gomez will soon be leaving and we are very sad to see him go!

In Math this week, students are continuing to revise time, division and counting money. They will also be introduced to measuring the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. Students are encouraged to continue practicing addition, subtraction, and multiplication (including memorizing the multiplication table up to 10 at home). We will continue to do the odd computation drills in +, -,
× and ÷ .
In Science this week, student have a special presentation by Jill Robertson, a staff member from HAT (Habitat Acquisition Trust). She will do a follow-up on our school planting and talk about ecosystems, our local food webs and stewardship. We will also be germinating some vegetable seeds here in class as we observe and record the germination process.

In English this week, we will start learning about long and short vowel sounds. We will also do small group reading and focus on applying these sounds and other reading strategies. We will start our Social Studies unit on Canada next week and we are continuing to do dance and yoga in the gym. In art, we will be going outside to draw some of our local wildflowers and other plants.

Have a wonderful week, Mme Garcin

Week of March 30th to April 2nd 2015

Chers familles,

This week is an exciting one. We are starting our week with Math by creating a graph using Smarties. Come and see them on display! This week in Math we are also reviewing how to read time and money before moving onto measurement. In addition to this, students will continue to explore different ways of multiplying and dividing single digit  numbers.

In French Language Arts, students are continuing to learn the past tense Passé Composé. We are learning to: identify this tense in sentences, conjugate them with fill-in-the blanks, write about our past experiences in our journals and highlight our use of this verb tense when speaking orally in-class. Students are also practicing their reading and reading strategies in small groups (on a weekly basis). Last week we focused on Oral Fluency (in particular liaison), the identification and pronunciation of verbs ending in -ent (pronounced e) and finding high frequency words.

In English this week, we are completing our Flat Stanley Poster projects. Come and see them on display in the hallway!

In Science this week we are starting our Plant Unit. Today we have a special outdoor presentation by the Sierra Club. This program, called "Going Wild", will engage students through their senses, interactive games and artifacts from our Coastal Rainforest ecosystem. For example, students will learn about wild products, ecosystem dynamics and stewardship of the forest. This will lead nicely into our study of local plants, their life cycles and why they are important to other living things.

We are also meeting with our buddies this week for an Easter Egg decorating activity. Last week, students created a mini egg basket from recycled tubes, which we will use to bring our eggs home with on Thursday. In the gym we are continuing dance and yoga.

Have a wonderful Easter and see you back at school on Tuesday, April 7th.

Tuesday 24 March 2015

Week of March 23rd - 27th

mardi le 24 mars, 2015

Welcome back from Spring Break! As students trickle back from holidays, we are doing some review of our French phonetics from our first ten dictées: é, è, a, i, u, en, an, in, on and ou. Students are using dictionaries, their journals, dictée booklets and French duotangs to find and learn new words in the French language!

This week, our dictée is based on the sound k and sk (see previous blog post for details of these sounds). In French Language Arts we are reviewing the irregular verbs avoir (to have) and être (to be). These are the auxiliary verbs we need to know for the past tense: passé compose (in English known as compound past tense). The passé composé is used to express an action that has been completed. It has 2 parts: the auxiliary verb (present tense of avoir or être), and the past participle of the verb. For example: I ate pizza yesterday = Hier, j'ai mangé de la pizza. Therefore, we are now learning to use this past tense: le passé composé.

In Math this week, we are reviewing single-digit multiplication and division up to 10. We will continue doing this through a variety of activities and drills. This term, we will be learning various forms of measurement, geometry and introducing fractions.

In English (and at the computer lab), we are close to finishing our Power Point slide show about ourselves. Next is our Flat Stanley poster project. This will begin later this week, as soon as everyone is back, and brings their poster, pictures and final copy of their write-up. Looks like Flat Stanley had many exciting adventures during the break!

This morning we planted some beautiful plans outside! This will lead nicely into our plant unit, where we will explore our local native wildflowers, learn the various parts of the plant and observe and record the plant germination process with our own seeds.

In Social Studies this term, we will be learning about Canadian geography, provinces and capitols. In the gym today, we continued to learn our dance routine, and explore various yoga poses and stretches.

Have a wonderful week everyone! Mme Garcin

K can also be written as C (before an a, o and u), QU and CH (words that have Greek origins such as orchestra, however cherche is pronounced shershe). The SK sound can also be written as SC (before an a , o and u).

1. Monsieur Scorpion joue de la musique.

2. Quatre jours par semaine, il pratique.

3. Il cherche un copain pour s'amuser.

4. Mais Monsieur Martien fait du karaté.

Week of March 2rd - 6th

lundi le 2 mars, 2015

It's our last week before Spring Break and students are finishing up various work they have been doing. We are reading daily in French, both individually and together as a class. We are working on reading strategies that help us understand what we are reading. For example, looking for picture clues, reading ahead and looking for smaller word that we recognize in bigger words we don't understand. All of these strategies help us better understand and re-tell stories we read. In writing, students are completing another pen pal letter. They are also writing a final, corrected version of a story they wrote about an adventure in the Canadian Arctic. Mr Gomez is also continuing Oral language games through drama, words and guessing games.

In English and Computers, students are continuing paragraph writing using PowerPoint. In math, students are continuing measurement, reviewing multiplication and division up to 10, and learning various ways to do addition and subtraction up to 1000.

Also, students are entering a Nationwide poster contest for WITS, the anti-bullying program. They are sharing their experience with WITS in a creative way! In the gym, we are learning a merengue dance routine, and cooling off on our yoga mats. Students are also learning how to be a mentor for their small buddies by engaging them in a variety of activities such as painting, building and reading.

Students are asked to return all their library books and home reading books to school by Thursday this week. Have a wonderful holiday and see you back at school on Monday, March 23rd, 2015!

Week of Feb 23rd - 27th

lundi le 23 février, 2015

Chèrs familles,

This week students are practicing their dictée and learning to identify and pronunciate the 'ou' sound. They are also learning to do a book report with a 'just right' French story they have chosen from the classroom library. This book report includes finding many aspects of the book such as: the author, the illustrator, the genre, describing the main and secondary characters, finding the problem and the solution. It even includes measuring the length and width of their book, which integrates nicely with our Math topic of the week: measurement.

In Math, students are estimating and using a variety of instruments such as rulers, tape measures and meter sticks. They are measuring classroom materials and body parts (including their height). We will re-measure our heights at the end of the school year to see how much we have grown!

In Social Studies this week, students are creating a timeline of their life, in chronological order. In Science, we have measured and taken photos of our structures. We will watch a slideshow of our structures and reflect on the challenges we faced when building these towers. In the Computer lab, students are continuing to create an English PowerPoint slide show about themselves using the paragraph format we are learning (introductory sentence, interesting details, and a concluding sentence). In Gym we will be doing some dance and yoga. In Art, students are completing some dot pictures of their favourite Chinese zodiac animal. Come and see these beautiful images on our wall!

Have a wonderful week! Mme Garcin

Thursday 19 February 2015

Look for these letter combinations in your dictée and home reading. For example, le loup (the wolf), is pronounced lou (the p is silent).

Here are the dictée sentences:

1. Sur la toundra je vois un iglou.

2. Il est fait de neige et de cailloux.

3. J'entre par un grand trou.

4. Je fais une soupe de choux.

Bonus: 5. J'écoute la chanson des loups.

Week of Feb 16th - 19th

lundi le 16 février, 2015

Salut chers familles,

Term 2 reports will be going home soon, therefore students are doing a variety of assessments. In Language Arts this week we are doing some listening, reading and writing exercises in both French and English. In Math, students are reviewing multiplication and division up to 10, as well as reading a 24 hour clock and adding money up to $10.00. Today students did a review test and on Wednesday morning another opportunity to show their learning in Math so far this year.

In Science today students measured the structures they built last week, in centimeters. This will lead into our measurement unit and we will learn to measure and compare ourselves and objects in the classroom and outside (using both centimeters and meters).

Today in the gym we had a special anti-bullying concert and presentation by touring musician Ryan Laird. We learned and sang the lyrics to his hit song "Bigger Than That", while also learning some important lessons about youth empowerment (ryanlaird.com). After the show we talked about positive traits we look for in people. For example kindness, patience and humour. Tomorrow we have Leslie from the Native Friendship Center coming in to do a First Nations craft activity. This will be her last visit in our classroom and we have prepared a thoughtful card with detailed comments of gratitude (in full sentences).

This week we are starting our yoga and dance unit. Please encourage your child to wear stretchy or loose fitting clothing on Tuesday's and Friday's when we have the gym. This will help with ease of movement and flexibility during these activities.

Please note there is no school this Friday, Feb 20th. See you back at school on Monday!

Have a great weekend, Mme Garcin

Week of Feb 10th - 13th

mardi le 10 février, 2015

This week in French Language Arts, students are writing a story about an adventure in the Canadian Arctic. Students are learning to apply their paragraph knowledge and Winter vocabulary to this short story. Students are also writing English paragraphs about themselves using the PowerPoint program. We are also practicing our dictée once using mini-chalkboards. Students are encouraged to practice their dictée several times at home throughout the week. Our phonetic sound this week is "on". When doing home reading, ask your child to point our the different ways this sound can be written in their books. This helps solidify French oral and written language because so many of the letters are silent. NOTE: the dictée this week is on Friday morning.

In Math, as we are nearing the end of term 2, students are continuing to review multiplication and division up to 10, time and money. Measurement is coming up next. An introduction to measurement in centimeters and meters will begin tomorrow when students build their Science towers. For Social Studies this week we have our full day field trip to the museum on Thursday. In the morning we have a tour of the First Nations exhibit. In the afternoon we'll be visiting the 21st Century Hall where many local Old Towne artifacts are to be explored from the last 100 years.

In PE today we did our last hockey practice. We are now doing yoga and dance. This Friday we will have a special dance workshop in the gym.

A few reminders for Friday: it is pink and red day and please remember to return library books, even for renewal. Thank you!

Have a wonderful week, Mme Garcin

The phonetic sound is "on". It can we written in many ways: on, onc, ond, ong, omb, ons, ont, om
Daily practice at home is highly recommended and only takes about 10 minutes. The more practice, the greater chance a child will feel success for hard work.

Here are some studying tips for students: a) make sure each sentence starts with a capitol and a period, b) learn the high frequency words that are often repeated (for example in this dictée the words "maman" "perdu", "son" (his/her) and "sont" (are), c) double check your work when you finish.

Here are the sentences:

1. La maman chatte a perdu son chaton.

2. La maman cane a perdu son caneton.

Monday 2 February 2015

Week of Feb 2nd - 6th

lundi le 2 février, 2015

Salut chers familles,

This week in Math students are doing multiplication and division drills up to 10 by applying the rules they have learned so far. For example, multiplying by a factor of 1 is always equal to the other factor  (1  × 9 = 9) and dividing a number by the same number always equals 1 ( 30 ÷ 30 = 1). Students are asked to have a good understanding of multiplication up to 10 (memorizing the table is recommended), to understand division up to 10, to read a 24 hour clock and to count money up to $25.00. There will be short quiz covering these topcis at the end of the week, or early next week.

In Language Arts, students are completing and correcting the French paragraphs they wrote last week. We are using our new classroom projector to look at a variety of sample paragraphs and correcting them together. French verb conjugations are being applied to our writing and other fill-in-the blank worksheets for extra practice. Next, students will write another paragraph in English using the same or a different topic.

In the computer lab this week, students are going have an introduction to PowerPoint. For the next few weeks, students will learn to combine their spelling vocabulary knowledge, paragraph writing skills and simple/compound sentence structures to create an interesting slide show. This PowerPoint program will be used for future projects as well. After the computer lab we go to the gym! We have been playing both indoor and outdoor hockey, depending on the weather.

On Thursday we have a 3rd visit with our buddies from Mme Koski's kindergarten class. So far, big buddies have: 1) taught small buddies body part vocabulary using life-size body tracing chart paper, and 2) completed a Venn diagram to share common and unique traits (eg hair colour, siblings, favourite sport, etc). This week we will do some drawing, reading and centers with our buddies.

In Science we are continuing to collect recycled materials for our final building project. Today students have practiced building with a variety of shapes and base strengthening materials. In Social Studies this week we will build a traditional long-house model, borrowed from the First Nations resource center. Also, throughout the next week or two, students are sharing their cultural artifact. So far we have some very beautiful items such as a Scottish tartan, a 100 year-old coffee grinder and a handmade Sioux First Nations deer hide bassinet (baby cradle). Thank you for sharing these wonderful artifacts!

Have a wonderful week, Mme Garcin
