Week of May 16th - 19th 2016

Chers familles de division 6,

In French Language Arts this week, students are writing a fictional story that includes an animal they have chosen from the National Geographic for Kids website. The beginning of their stories will include important introductory details such as who, what, when and where. The middle has a problem, and the end of the story has a solution. Students will first create an outline of ideas, followed by a draft and then a final copy. Students are now applying verbs in the present and past tense. Today, students spoke and wrote in their journals about what they did this weekend using verbs only in the past tense. In reading, students are continuing to read independently on a daily basis. They are also reading in smalls group once a week. As we are approaching the end of term three, students are each taking turns reading one-on-one with their teacher.

In grade 2 students are continuing their graphing practice and the probability of an event from occurring (statistics). In Math, grade 3's are continuing to learn how to describe and sort 2-D and 3-D shapes. New this week are axes of symmetry. Grade 3's are also reviewing the addition and subtraction of 2 and 3-digit numbers using the carry-over and borrowing strategies.

In Science, students have chosen an animal from the National Geographic for Kids website. This week in English and Science combined, all students will begin to create a PowerPoint slide show. It will include research and a summary about their animal habitat, physical features and choice of reproduction, predator & prey and fun facts. Towards the end of the year, students will present their slide shows in-class.

In PE, students are continuing to learn tennis skills such as the over hand and under hand techniques. They are also getting a lot of practice with their hand-eye coordination and positioning their bodies in order to hit the ball with a racket. We are also continuing outdoor track activities and will be doing relay this week.

Please note that this Friday May 20th is a Pro-D Day and Monday is the Victoria Day holiday. See you back at school on Tuesday, May 24th.

Have a great week! Mme Garcin
