Week of Nov 14th - 17th, 2016

Dear Division 6 families,

In French Language Arts this week, students are receiving their first pen pal letters from Doncaster! They will read them to each other in small groups and to the class if they wish. They will then learn how to write a letter, and begin a draft in their journals. Students are also writing the final corrected draft of their fictional stories about their adventure in space. As with the letters, students will learn important aspects of public speaking such as using a loud, clear voice, with some eye contact and changes in voice tone. In grammar, students will continue to learn how to conjugate regular -er verbs, -re and -ir verbs.

In Math, students are learning how to multiply by 5 and 10 by looking for patterns. For example, when multiplying by five, the ones always end in a 0 or a 5. When multiplying by 10, add a 0 to the other factor.

In English, students are learning the common sight words beginning with letters e and f (in preparation for their spelling test on Thursday). If time permits, students will continue to learn and practice identifying and spelling a wide variety of homonyms. Some are continuing to write a short story using the short e vowel sound.

In Science today we went to the Harland Landfill. We leaned all about how waste disposal is managed and why it is so important to reduce, reuse and recycle. We also saw firsthand how solid matter decomposes into water and gas. The gas is even used to generate power at the landfill!

In combination with Social Studies and Art this week, students are learning about the importance of the talking stick (speaking and listening). Mrs. Bourque is coming in again this week to complete the decoration of our painted sticks with strings, beads and feathers. Our new counselor Katie Lukes, is also coming in to do a special presentation on Thursday about "zones of regulation". This is a program that gives students strategies for being self-aware of their bodies, feelings and voices. Our physical activities this week will include outdoor play, movement exercises and possibly some yoga (stretching).

This is a 4-day week with a Pro-D day on Friday. Have a wonderful week!
