Week of Nov 28th - Dec 2nd, 2016

lundi le 28 novembre, 2016

In French, students are learning to conjugate regular verbs ending in -re in the present tense. For example, répondre, vendre, prendre, attendre. Students are also reading and writing their pen pal letters. In these letters, students are responding to questions and asking questions. Writing these letters is also helping us apply grammar we have been learning so far. For example, full sentences with capital letters and periods, conjugating verbs in the present tense and applying the subject, verb and adjective agreement using feminine/masculine and singular/plural endings. This week and next, I will be reading with students individually. I will help them with their oral fluency and review decoding and comprehension strategies.

In Math this week, students are learning one-digit division and how it is related to multiplication. For example, 3 X 4=12 and 12 ÷ 3= 4. In English, students will continue to write a short story using words with the short I vowel sound. I will also be reading with them individually to see where they are at in word decoding and text comprehension.

In Science, we have created a list of "big questions", some related to space sciences, others are general questions. For example today we learned "Why do birds fly". Some of our other questions are: Why does the earth spin? Why don't we walk on four legs like animals? Why do balls bounce? What was the first language on earth?

In Social Studies and Art this week, students will have a presentation by an organization called "African Aids Angels". Students will learn about African animals and cultures and how AIDS has affected the lives of children and families. They will learn how they can help these children (money for food, clothing, medicine, school supplies) and in exchange create a craft angel. These angels will be ornaments students can hang in a tree at the Government House Tree decorating party. On Friday we are doing the second part of last week's art project: printmaking. Using a story about truthfulness called "The Empty Pot" for inspiration, students are creating a story sequence of 6 images that will be printed using a roller and ink. Thank you to Anisa for doing this wonderful activity!

In PE last week and this week, students are using the ball skills they've been learning in a game called "bench ball". Students are learning to aim, throw, move and play respectfully with a team. Students are also practicing their song a little more often now for the upcoming intermediate winter concert on Wednesday, Dec 7th next week at 1:30pm. Family and friends are welcome in the Quadra gym!

Happy learning! Mme Garcin
